Les historiens ont longtemps admis que les empereurs romains faisaient combattre des femmes gladiateurs contre des nains pour produire une étrange parodie des combats de l’arène. Or, un nouvel examen des témoignages au sujet des gladiatrices indique que ces paires de combattants n’ont jamais existé. En réalité, les femmes gladiateurs et venatores n’étaient pas un élément commun des jeux. La raison pour laquelle ces guerrières ont frappé l’esprit de leurs contemporains a mal été comprise. En effet, ce n’était pas leur inaptitude amusante que l’on appréciait chez elles, mais leur talent à faire preuve de valeur guerrière alors qu’on les en considérait incapables
