Too often the concept of national cinema is taught as though it was always linked to a nation‐state, and as though most given national cinemas could be linked to a set of common stylistic or thematic (and often nationalism‐related) problems. This tendency is perhaps most strongly re‐enforced by Steven Crofts' widely used essay ‘Re‐conceptualizing National Cinema/s’. Following more from Andrew Higson's essay ‘The Concept of National Cinema’, I would like to propose that national cinemas be identified and discussed in terms that centralise the institutional facilities in a given territory and, to a certain extent, the presence of a national consciousness in that territory
