Inscriptions have a crucial role to play in our understanding of Roman family history. This chapter underlines some of the methodological problems in using inscriptions for such topics as the demography of the family, family relations, and family structures. Despite these problems, it demonstrates how inscriptions are revealing for topics such as kinship, marriage, spousal affection, childbirth, and the rearing of children
