The idea is spreading at the moment that Pausanias' Greece is undivided and derives, despite regional diversity, from a global vision. Several scholars thus propose a "unitary" conception of the Periegesis, of which the aim would be to describe "Greek identity". But can one attribute a feeling of panhellenism to Pausanias ? Is what is common to Greeks more important in his eyes than what divides them ? In fact, for religious life his references back to the panhellenic tradition are a form of recourse to a common language in order to be understood by his readers ; but emphasis is put above all on particular local features, differences and singularities. Likewise for the history of Greece, if Pausanias refers to common substrate, what he emphasises are divergences among Greeks much more than their unity ; as for the frequently cited passages of Books I, 26, 4 and VIII, 52, 4-5, it is excessive to find in them the expression of a panhellenic "ideal". Pausanias as writer means to please by gathering together and transmitting the heritage of Greece's past ; in it religion takes a preponderant place ; there is no need to assign to him a design either political or religious
