Graham McFee’s new book, the latest in his long series of important contributions to the dialogue on philosophy of dance, has much that is to be appreciated. His explicit and detailed self-awareness with regard to his book’s methodology provides welcome clarity and an instruction manual for organizing any complex work. His meticulous documentation of sourcing, for influential ideas as well as direct quotations, is a model for excellent scholarship—sadly not always followed in academic dialogue. The breadth and depth of his provision of context for the issues is impressive. While many readers will be familiar with some of his material, McFee fleshes out the landscape admirably and helpfully. Most importantly, his familiarity with the extensive landscape of the specialized art form of dance is welcome: he uses examples to explicate his views on action theory and their explanatory power. Those who share his lifelong love of dance will recognize and appreciate his passion for it and his insightful use of these examples to support his analyses. Philosophers of dance always welcome newcomers to the art form, of course, but those of us with a lifelong priority (indeed, an obsession) for this complex and fascinating, but oft-neglected, art form appreciate his shared expertise
