This paper which introduces an issue of a journal devoted to articles on adolescent parenting opens by reviewing the new social morbidities facing adolescents in the US that compromise their educational performance. The paper then asserts that addressing adolescent parenting requires an understanding of the sociohistorical concern about adolescent pregnancy in the US and offers a framework for such an understanding based on a review of the literature on welfare reform the adverse consequences of early childbearing and the shortcoming of efforts to address adolescent sexuality in schools. The paper continues by offering a reframing of the problem based on the literature and on articles in this journal that removes the primary burden of prevention from the adolescent girl and considers instead 1) familial and social contexts such as sibling pregnancies and male perceptions; 2) a schooling context including limited curriculum options and availability of on-site day care; and 3) a community context that involves access to integrated services for long-term support. Finally the implications for policy-makers and urban educators are identified as the necessity to 1) confront the inability of schools to allow adolescents to articulate viewpoints that conflict with standards 2) adopt successful sex education programs 3) make programs community-specific and culturally-sensitive 4) provide additional school support to adolescent mothers and 5) seek partnerships with businesses social service agencies and health workers
