The Cultural Complexities of Learning and Development in A Post-Modern World
The books under review focus on the role culture plays in studies of childhood socialization, learning, schooling in global contexts, and educational change. Key chapters highlight schooling practices not well known in Western culture. Both books advocate understanding and respecting cultural differences while emphasizing that cultures are dialectally reshaping and reorganizing in response to rapidly changing economic, political, and social force…

Bodytalk: Discourses of Sexuality among Adolescent African American Girls
Sociolinguistics has always emphasized the critical importance of the social con text in which language use is embedded (Hymes 1974a). Recently researchers have begun to emphasize that language not only reflects context but indeed creates it (e.g., Duranti & Goodwin 1992). Of particular relevance to this chapter is the contention by Gumperz and Cook-Gumperz (1982) that social categories, such as race, gender, and class, are constructed through so…
Framing Teen Parenting: Cultural and Social Contexts
This paper which introduces an issue of a journal devoted to articles on adolescent parenting opens by reviewing the new social morbidities facing adolescents in the US that compromise their educational performance. The paper then asserts that addressing adolescent parenting requires an understanding of the sociohistorical concern about adolescent pregnancy in the US and offers a framework for such an understanding based on a review of the litera…
Boys will be Boys: Young Males' Perceptions of Women, Sexuality, and Prevention
This article reports on a study of males perceptions about women how those perceptions were formed and the ideas young men have about ways to improve sexuality curricula. Data were gathered from interviews with 17 US male college students aged 18-22 (5 White 4 Hispanic 4 Black and 4 Asian-American). A review of the literature precedes discussion of findings on each of the following topics: the prevailing sexual double standard that rewards young …

Distancing passion: Narratives in Social Science
How knowledge is framed determines its importance. This essay explores the use of narratives in social science writing and posits that the way in which academics choose to display their meaning shapes their identity as scholars. The argument that emotion and reason can be linked through narratives is discussed in relation to issues of textual organization, narrative voice, and the politics of metaphor. By using narratives, scholars become storyte…

Talking to the turtle: A discourse analysis of logo instruction
The effect of Logo on children's cognitive development may depend upon the nature of the instructional process. From a Vygotskian perspective, the teacher's use of mediated strategies is conceptualized as the most critical component. The transition from other regulation to self‐regulation should be reflected in the discourse structure as children acquire greater competence in programming through adult scaffolding of commands. A discourse analysis…
Toward cultural pluralism: Redefining integration in American society
Argument as status assertion: Contextual variations in children's disputes
Previous analyses of children's disputes have concentrated on the use of various strategies within discrete activity contexts. Using data from an ethnographic study of an integrated kindergarten, it is suggested that children's disputes are strongly influenced by the activity and role structure of a given event, and that variations in how an event is contextualized are linked to the social structure of the classroom. Analytical problems in studyi…

The Color of Misbehaving: Two Case Studies of Deviant Boys
Teacher A: I don't know what I'm going to do with Johnny Jones. He was just impossible today. Teacher B: Well, what do you expect? You know, he comes from a poor family with no father, and that's the way they behave anyway. Teacher A: Yeah, I know. But it's too bad. He could be such a nice kid if only he could learn to control his behavior. Perhaps putting him in a special class would help him do that. Teacher B: It might. And at least he'd be ou…
The intimacy of address: Friendship Markers in Children's Social Play
In this paper, a preschool children's game is analyzed with reference to patterns of address used by intimates in beginning utterances. The findings reveal that the alternation between real and pretend names functions to mark context shifts in the nature of the activities, and to delineate role relationships among the participants along the dimensions of power and affiliation. It is suggested that variations in how children address one another pr…
