This is a thoroughly researched, scholarly survey of the role and depiction of royal and noble women in the crusades to the Middle East and the so-called ‘crusader states’ during the period 1095–1291. Dr Hodgson begins by defining her subject and what she means by ‘historical narratives’, considering questions of authorship and providing an overview of women as audience of these works, women's involvement in the crusade movement and medieval perceptions of women on crusade and their involvement in warfare. She then goes on to examine women's portrayal in narratives of the crusade and the Latin East, as daughters, wives, mothers and widows. The volume includes a full bibliography and an index. As Hodgson points out in her introduction, there has been in recent decades considerable research on medieval women's involvement in various aspects of crusading, but the work has been piecemeal, concentrating on certain crusades or certain locations. In addition, it has tended to focus on crusades for which sources in translation are readily available. An overall survey of the subject has been long overdue. Hodgson's study draws together a multiplicity of themes and aspects of women's involvement in crusading and the political life of the crusader states
