Though much has been written about the public house, this is the first scholarly survey which synthesises previous scholarship with original research. Paul Jennings effectively draws on his first monograph, a well-researched study of The Public House in Bradford, 1770–1970 (1995; rev. ante, cxiii [1998], 216), to provide a balanced portrayal of broad national developments. He aims less at the specialist than at the general reader who wants a brief, informed, competent and often entertaining overview written by a scholar. Unusually for a book in this genre, he documents his sources in endnotes. In lieu of a bibliography, he lists his major secondary sources in a separate section. Photographs, cartoons, and maps are marshalled effectively, and do much to enliven the text. His subtitle, A History of the English Pub, makes his book seem rather broader than the contents themselves justify, and requires some explanation. Inns, taverns and alehouses had existed for centuries, but, as Jennings notes, the term ‘public house’, probably a derivation of ‘public drinking house’, only became common in the eighteenth century, when Jennings begins his survey. The Local thus should be read in conjunction with The English Alehouse: A Social History, 1200–1830 (1983; rev. ante, ci [1986], 499–500), in which Peter Clark offered a detailed original analysis, based on extensive archival research with voluminous documentation
