SUMMARY The changing relations between educational and scientific geography are considered and geographers' contributions to educational content as well as to epistomological and educational discussions are appreciated. Geography curricula and the balance between local and national curricula are discussed with emphasis on draft national curricula for Denmark as well as England and Wales. The discussion presents a model for educational decision making at different levels. Various dimensions of geographical education in these countries are elucidated and the European and wider curriculum perspectives are touched upon. Findings from a questionnaire study among European Standing Conference of Geography Teachers Associations are reported and the need for comparative curriculum studies are highlighted. Prerequisites for geographical educational research are considered and the need and rationale for research and educational development are stressed.
