As Prussian professors had to swear loyalty to the king and allegiance to certain dogmas of faith, Immanuel Kant's critique of oath-taking concerns the very conditions of philosophy itself. Drawing together his scattered remarks on the subject, this article tries to reconstruct Kant's attempt to purify the practice of swearing from superstition on the basis of his doctrine of postulates
