North Carolina is in the process of implementing the Basic Education Program (BEP). By 1995, all local school systems will have a full K-12 foreign language program in place and available to all students in at least one language. Beginning in 1995, all children K-5 will be required to study a foreign language through the elementary grades. This article will report on the current progress of the initiative. After a brief history concerning the legislation, program implementation, and teacher training will be discussed
