ALTHOUGH Heriberto Frias' lesser light has been largely eclipsed by other novelists of Mexico's Diaz era, recent publications have shown a growing interest in this combative author whose lacerating social commentary brought him repeated persecution and imprisonment. Frias' novels, notably Tomochic, El uiltimo duelo, El amor de las sirenas, and ?Aguila o sol?,1 plus a broad array of shorter works, are of increasing historical interest, owing to their portrayal of Mexico's gaudy but cancerous paz porfiriana. Increasing too, is an awareness of Frias' literary merits, for while his works stand sharply apart from the more polished novels of Gamboa, L6pez-Portillo, and Delgado, his rough-hewn vigor and unabashed mexicanidad trumpet the coming of such novelists as Mariano Azuela and Gregorio L6pez y Fuentes.2
