O presente artigo deriva de uma profunda pesquisa historiográfica sobre o ensino de português como língua estrangeira ao longo dos anos de 1940 nos Estados Unidos. Guiando-se exclusivamente por Koerner (1995), descrevem-se as influências de períodos anteriores sobre a referida década e, desta, breve e ilustrativamente, sobre a seguinte. Trata-se de um levantamento, a partir dos documentos impressos consultados, do contexto histórico-cultural e das concepções linguísticas, sócio-econômicas e políticas que influenciam e caracterizam o recorte histórico. Essa descrição permite interpretar os anos de 1940 como favoráveis ao Brasil, fato que implicou a escolha e a promoção de uma variante chamada brasileira para o ensino de português nos Estados Unidos em períodos posteriores
