Ashok Swain and Anders Jägerskog examine vulnerabilities that have the potential to become regional security threats in the Middle East. In particular, the authors are concerned with the Mashrek region and the Arabian peninsula, including Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria as well as Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Though they note several ongoing problems, the book focuses on how emerging issues have the power to further impact contemporary security. The study takes an inclusive approach, exploring how climate change and globalization will add to concerns in the region and how regional and global actors have recently turned their attention to development issues and sustainability. ‘The combination of having regimes that are determined to stay in power and at the same time are unable to meet the development and economic needs of the people carries the risk of creating internal instability’ (p. 27). Indeed, the failure to achieve democratic reforms has created insecure surroundings where extremists thrive and a spillover that has affected neighbouring countries
