Secondary analysis of the UK’s 2011/12 Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey reveals that many existing assumptions about graduate internships are questionable. A case study of 102 surface and underground coal miners in the western United States randomly selected from a telephone survey of two mining communities was conducted, examining their perceptions of working conditions and health both before and after the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Miners working since 1970 reported lower amounts of dust breathed in, increased dust‐mask use, and better mine ventilation. Respiratory illnesses,…
Injuries, arthritis, and hearing impairment
Coal mining has been, and continues to be, a hazardous occupation with some of the highest rates of death and injury. The authors conducted a study of former and current coal miners from the western United States to identify the prevalence of acute injuries as well as arthritis and hearing impairment. It is pleasant to be able to record that the year which has passed since our last anniversary meeting has seen our Society make satisfactory progress in all respects. Our numbers have increased. Our losses by death have been nine, and by resignation nine, and four names have been removed from our roll for non-payment of subscription. On the other hand, forty-two new Fellows have been elected, among them some whom we have special reason to welcome…
