Is dyslexia a form of specific language impairment? a comparison of dyslexic and language impaired children as adolescents
The Demand for Lotto
This article presents estimates of the elasticity of demand for lottery tickets using time series data in which there is variation in the expected value of a lottery ticket induced by rollovers. An important feature of our data is that there are far more rollovers than expected given the lottery design. We find strong evidence that individuals do not choose their lottery numbers uniformly from a uniform distribution—that is, conscious selection. …

Until the late 1960s, state schooling in England and Wales was determined by an ability test of pupils at age 11 which had an effect on both the quantity and quality of education. By estimating the relationship between earnings and earlier schooling during a period when school areas changed from selective to non‐selective education, we consider how the returns to the quantity of education are confounded by differences in the quality of schooling …
The Labour Supply, Unemployment and Participation of Lone Mothers in In‐Work Transfer Programmes
In‐work transfer schemes have recently been suggested as a device for encouraging labour force participation and reducing the severity of the disincentives associated with out‐of‐work income support schemes. Does Education Raise Productivity, or Just Reflect it
Education has an important effect on wages but it not clear whether this is because education raises productivity or because education is simply a signal of ability. We implement a number of existing tests for discriminating between these two explanations and find that they do not support the signalling hypothesis. This article studies the determinants of partnership dissolution and focuses on the role of child support. Does Education Raise Productivity, or Just Reflect it
Education has an important effect on wages but it not clear whether this is because education raises productivity or because education is simply a signal of ability. We implement a number of existing tests for discriminating between these two explanations and find that they do not support the signalling hypothesis.
