  • Dual-Process and Framing Models in Sociology: European Contributions and Cross-Disciplinary Bridges

Clemens Kroneberg, Andreas Tutić•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•2026

Human behavior can vary markedly across situations, yet it at times exhibits striking persistence. To account for these characteristics, cognitive sociologists have focused on two aspects: how situational cues—including the presence and behavior of others—activate mental structures and predispositions, such as schemas, frames, or repertoires, and how behavior is governed by dual processes, whether through autonomous, associative activation or con…

  • When does a provocation demand a violent response? A randomized scenario study of the code of the street

Open Access•Clemens Kroneberg, André Ernst et al.•ARTICLE•Theory and Society•2026•References: 53

Elijah Anderson’s seminal work on the “Code of the Street” details how individuals use violence to defend and gain respect in violent neighborhoods. We provide his account with choice-theoretic foundations to derive hypotheses on how individuals’ willingness to use violence depends on their street code beliefs, the strength of provocation, and their exposure to violence in their neighborhoods. Using data from a survey of 10th graders in 46 school…

  • The Self-Control Ability Scale: Measuring a Key Construct of Situational Action Theory

Open Access•Fabian Hasselhorn, Simone Sattler et al.•ARTICLE•Justice Quarterly•2025

Situational Action Theory (SAT) has emerged as a prominent theory of crime and delinquency. It includes a new conceptualization of self-control, which emphasizes its role in enabling individuals to adhere to their morality when deliberating about deviant and non-deviant action alternatives. However, existing self-control scales do not directly capture this role of self-control as a guardian of personal morality when externally challenged. To clos…

  • When Violence Is Not an Option: Perceived Choice Sets and Differential Deterrability Among Adolescents in Germany

    Open Access•Clemens Kroneberg, Christof Nägel•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2025

The idea that individuals differ in their perceived choice sets or repertoires has a long tradition in criminology and is a common ingredient of modern choice theories. We test this assumption in a large-scale school survey of seventh graders in Germany. Eliciting perceived action alternatives in a provocation scenario, we examine the frequency of purely non-violent, purely violent, and mixed repertoires. Our results confirm that a large share of…

  • Re-print of: Contextualizing oppositional cultures: A multilevel network analysis of status orders in schools

    Open Access•H Kruse, Clemens Kroneberg•ARTICLE•Social Networks•2024•References: 26

Different lines of research have argued that specific groups, such as boys or ethnic minorities, are more prone to develop an anti-school culture than others, leading to group differences in the social acceptance of high performers. Taking an ecological view, we ask to what extent the school context promotes or prevents the emergence of group-specific oppositional cultures. Theoretically, we argue that group-based oppositional cultures become mor…

  • Mode of contact and mood changes during the Covid-19 pandemic: A daily diary study during school closures and re-opened schools

Open Access•Heike Krüger, Clemens Kroneberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 57

The emotional consequences of online social contact in adolescents are a controversial topic. Social interactions and membership in social groups have been identified as essential protection against negative mood. However, different modes of online and offline communication differ in their ability to satisfy the individuals' need for social closeness. Using a daily diary study, the current work investigated how in-person contact, text messaging, …

  • The Ethnic Lens: Social Networks and the Salience of Ethnicity in the School Context

    Open Access•Clemens Kroneberg, Mark Wittek•ARTICLE•Sociological Science•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 30

Research on ethnic segregation in schools regularly assumed that ethnic homophily—the tendency to befriend same-ethnic peers, above and beyond other mechanisms of tie formation—is associated with salient ethnic boundaries. We devise a more direct test of this assumption based on a novel measure of ethno-racial group perceptions. In a network study of more than 3000 students in 39 schools of a metropolitan region in Germany, we asked students to i…

  • Using police data to measure criminogenic exposure in residential and school contexts: Experiences from a data linkage project in Germany

Open Access•Clemens Kroneberg, Sven Lenkewitz et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2022

Police data and survey research provide different bases to inform research on crime and delinquency. We argue that linking police data on local crime incidences to criminological surveys allows for new insights on the role of residential and school contexts for juvenile delinquency and violence. We describe the challenges and solutions of combining these data sources in a collaboration between the state police of North Rhine-Westphalia – Germany’…

  • Action

Clemens Kroneberg, Andreas Tutić•CHAPTER•Research Handbook on Analytical…•2021

To clarify the different roles attributed to action theories in analytical sociology, we distinguish between a weak and a strong program of action theory. Avoiding the debates about “rationality” that have occupied rational choice scholars, the weak program pragmatically employs different and often simple behavioral rules, directing most attention to modelling social dynamics. In contrast, the strong program holds onto the desirability of a theor…

  • Analytic Criminology: Mechanisms and Methods in the Explanation of Crime and its Causes

    Open Access•Per‐olof H Wikström, Clemens Kroneberg•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Criminology•2021•Cited by: 13•References: 28

Criminology is a smorgasbord of disparate theory and poorly integrated research findings. Theories tend to focus either on people's crime propensity or the criminogenic inducements of environments; rarely are these two main approaches effectively combined in the analysis of crime and its causes. Criminological research often either avoids questions of causation and explanation (e.g., risk factor approach) or is based on research designs that yiel…

  • When Ethnicity and Gender Align: Classroom Composition, Friendship Segregation, and Collective Identities in European Schools

    Open Access•Clemens Kroneberg, H Kruse et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 58

Using survey data on school classes in four European countries, we study how the social relations and identities of adolescents develop depending on the degree to which ethnic and gender boundaries align with each other. Minority students will have mostly same-ethnic friends, we find, when classmates of different ethnic origins tend to be of the opposite sex as well. Within such local topographies of boundaries, minority students will also end up…

  • Who is fighting with whom? How ethnic origin shapes friendship, dislike, and physical violence relations in German secondary schools

Open Access•M Wittek, Clemens Kroneberg et al.•ARTICLE•Social Networks•2020

This study examines the role of ethnic background for friendship, dislike, and violence networks in secondary school. We analyze data on multiple networks from a large-scale study of more than 2500 seventh-graders in Germany. In addition to ethnic homophily in friendship networks, our results reveal a tendency among students to dislike ethnic outgroup members (ethnic heterophobia). However, students are more likely to engage in violence towards s…

  • More Than a Sorting Machine: Ethnic Boundary Making in a Stratified School System

    H Kruse, Clemens Kroneberg•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•2019•Cited by: 31•References: 111

This article examines the structural conditions that shape ethnic boundary making in the school setting. While previous work has focused on the ethnic composition of student bodies, this study places schools in their institutional and local contexts. The authors argue that the formation of identities and networks varies across local areas depending on the extent of ethnic stratification across schools. Empirically, the authors turn to the case of…

  • Ethnic Discrimination in the German Housing Market: A Field Experiment on the Underlying Mechanisms

Andreas Horr, Christian Hunkler et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Soziologie•2018•Cited by: 24•References: 7

Ethnic discrimination in the housing market has long been seen as a cause of residential segregation and social inequality. While research has investigated the existence and extent of discrimination with regard to written applications for housing, little is known about personal inquiries via telephone. This study reports on findings from a telephone audit study that has allowed us to estimate the impact of (ethnic) accents and to distinguish betw…

  • Institutional trust and the provision of public goods: When do individual costs matter? The case of recycling

Open Access•Stephan Rompf, Stephan Alexander Rompf et al.•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 24

This research asks whether and how institutional trust-trust in the reliability, effectiveness, and legitimacy of public institutions-promotes the provision of public goods. To understand the underlying mechanisms, we apply three choice models to the example of recycling behavior: a standard rational choice model, the low-cost hypothesis, and a dual-process theory. The models carry competing hypotheses about the interplay of trust and incentives …

  • Language Boundaries and the Subjective Well-Being of Immigrants in Europe

    Harald Beier, Clemens Kroneberg•ARTICLE•New Community•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 34

This study contributes to the growing literature on social and ethnic boundaries by tracing the impact of symbolic language boundaries in 20 European countries. Using data from the 2002–03 wave of the European Social Survey, we show that the language boundaries drawn in different host societies affect the subjective well-being of first- and second-generation immigrants. Confirming theoretical expectations, we find that symbolic boundaries only in…

  • The Interplay of Moral Norms and Instrumental Incentives in Crime Causation

Open Access•Clemens Kroneberg, ISOLDE HEINTZE et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•2010•Cited by: 54•References: 74

Rational choice theories (RCTs) of crime assume actors behave in an instrumental, outcome‐oriented way. Accordingly, individuals should weight the costs and benefits of criminal acts with subjective probabilities that these outcomes will occur. Previous studies either do not directly test this central hypothesis or else yield inconsistent results. We show that a meaningful test can be conducted only if a broader view is adopted that takes into ac…

  • Rational Choice Theory and Empirical Research: Methodological and Theoretical Contributions in Europe

Clemens Kroneberg, Frank Kalter•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•2012•Cited by: 41•References: 99

Rational choice theory (RCT) constitutes a major approach of sociological theorizing and research in Europe. We review key methodological and theoretical contributions that have arisen from the increasing empirical application of RCT and have the potential to stimulate the development of RCT and sociology more generally. Methodologically, discussions have evolved around how to test RCT empirically and how to realize its ambition to give theory-gu…

    Open Access•Clemens Kroneberg•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2008•Cited by: 27•References: 41

This article examines the theory of segmented assimilation, which traces the divergent adaptation of immigrant children in the post-1969 wave to the nature of reception by U.S. society, access to social capital through ethnic communities, and exposure to oppositional cultures of marginalized domestic minorities. The article provides a test of those arguments in the area of school performance. Based on data from the Children of Immigrants Longitud…

    Open Access•Clemens Kroneberg, M Yaish et al.•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2010•Cited by: 23•References: 38

The rescue of Jews in WWII and electoral participation both constitute prominent puzzles for rational choice theories of human behavior and have given rise to lengthy debates about norms and rationality. To explain both phenomena, we apply the Model of Frame Selection. This theory of action provides an integrated account of norms and rationality, where cost-benefit calculus is replaced by unconditional norm conformity if actors hold strongly acti…

Actors seek coalitions that grant them the most advantageous exchange of taxation against public goods and of military support against political partic…

  • Variable Rationalität in soziologischen Handlungstheorien

    Clemens Kroneberg•CHAPTER•Die Erklärung Sozialen Handelns•2011

    Clemens Kroneberg•CHAPTER•Die Erklärung Sozialen Handelns•2011

    Clemens Kroneberg•CHAPTER•Die Erklärung Sozialen Handelns•2011

    Clemens Kroneberg•CHAPTER•Die Erklärung Sozialen Handelns•2011

    Clemens Kroneberg•CHAPTER•Die Erklärung Sozialen Handelns•2011

    Clemens Kroneberg•CHAPTER•Soziale Differenzierung•2011

    Jens Greve, Clemens Kroneberg•CHAPTER•Soziale Differenzierung•2011

  • Struggling over the Boundaries of Belonging: A Formal Model of Nation Building, Ethnic Closure, and Populism

Clemens Kroneberg, Andreas Wimmer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•2012•Cited by: 19•References: 53

This article explores the conditions under which political modernization leads to nation building, to the politicization of ethnic cleavages, or to populism by modeling these three outcomes as more or less encompassing exchange relationships between state elites, counterelites, and the population. Actors seek coalitions that grant them the most advantageous exchange of taxation against public goods and of military support against political partic…
