James A Forte, Vicki Root•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Behavior in the…•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Hybrid education includes an online component and interaction between students and teacher by televised sound and image. This approach contrasts dramatically with traditional face-to-face teaching and classroom teaching modalities enhanced by Web-based tools. Should educators in "human behavior and the social environment" (HBSE) use hybrid technologies? This study explores the differences and similarities in student satisfaction and learning outc…

  • Teaching Human Development

    James A Forte•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Behavior in the…•2009•References: 29

Contemporary social work education in the area of human development is anemic. There is too little coverage of the theoretical frameworks, models, theorists, competencies, and functions necessary to prepare students for careers that apply developmental science. This premise is supported by a content analysis of 12 human development textbooks and 44 course outlines. Three major strategies—teaching by models, teaching by metaphors, and teaching by …

  • Using A Semiotic Metatheory for Theory Understanding, Appraisal, and Use

    Open Access•James A Forte•ARTICLE•Advances in Social Work•2007

Charles Sanders Peirce's creed, 'Do Not Block Inquiry,' and his triadic model of the signs serve as the base for a semiotic metatheory of science and scientific theory. Semioticians characterize science as a universe of diverse sign systems, and scientists as members of different language communities. This paper introduces this approach. Affect control theorists ponder and investigate how actors, identities, actions, objects, emotions, and social …

  • Not in My Social World

    James A Forte•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•2002•Cited by: 3

The social constructionist approach offers conceptual tools that may augment social workers' persuasive powers and problem solving capacities. In this case study, I examine a newspaper campaign to cast the homeless in negative terms and justify the closing of a shelter. Findings are presented as seven themes used by competing claims-makers. Each constructs a different depiction of the homeless, of homelessness, and of preferred solutions. Linkage…

  • Power and Role-Taking

    James A Forte•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Behavior in the…•1998•Cited by: 8•References: 73

Power and role-taking theory argues that social structural arrangements influence face-to-face communication processes. Specifically, powerful and powerless interactants tend to differ in their motivation to take the other's role and in the accuracy of their interpersonal understandings. Basic concepts of the theory and its interrelated propositions are identified. A comprehensive literature review gauged its empirical support. With some qualific…

  • Asymmetrical Role-Taking

    James A Forte, David D Franks et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work•1996•Cited by: 7

Franks's social psychological model of oppressive situations and asymmetric role-taking offers a new way of understanding the predicaments faced by battered women. Unlike individualistic or single-factor explanations, the model suggests that women faced with a particular combination of situational pressures and relationship inequities are especially vulnerable to distressful emotions and self-esteem difficulties. Survey data from 66 battered wome…

  • The Reliability and Validity of the Index of Peer Relations with a Clinical and Nonclinical Sample of Adolescents

James A Forte, Robert G Green•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•1994

Although the Index of Peer Relations (IPR) has been designed for use with adolescent and adult clients, previous evaluations of this prominent measurement device have been conducted with exclusively adult samples. Consequently, there are no available empirical guidelines for the use of this prominent measure with teenaged clients. The present study, herefore, evaluates the reliability and validity of the IPR with a sample of clinical and nonclini…
