Coming Out and the Potential for Growth in Sexual Minorities
Coming out is a significant and sometimes difficult process in the lives of sexual minorities, but disclosure can also affect wellbeing in positive ways, including reduced distress and greater relationship satisfaction. This study investigates the possibility of stress-related growth and depreciation following coming out. To obtain a diverse sample with varying coming-out experiences, data were collected from undergraduate students as well as fro…

Are students ready for meaningful use
BackgroundThe meaningful use (MU) of electronic medical records (EMRs) is being implemented in three stages. Key objectives of stage one include electronic analysis of data entered into structured fields, using decision-support tools (e.g., checking drug–drug interactions [DDI]) and electronic information exchange.ObjectiveThe authors assessed the performance of medical students on 10 stage-one MU tasks and measured the correlation between studen…

Reform Fatigue Following the Fitzgerald Report
The creation of the Electoral and Administrative Review Commission (EARC) was recommended in the Fitzgerald Report. Like the Criminal Justice Commission, it was recommended to be a 'permanent' body. The legislation establishing the EARC gave it a mandate to examine the relevant Fitzgerald recommendations, but also made it possible for the government or the parliament (through the Parliamentary Committee) to request it to undertake other reviews. …
Strategies for developing sustainable open access scholarly journals
This paper discusses different forms of open access publishing and argues that small independent journals that are funded though subsidies provide an important niche in scholarly publishing. One such journal, Medical Education Online (MEO) is used as a case study characterizing the dilemma these journals can face in maintaining their operations as they become successful and their need for resources grows. The paper discusses several strategies fo…
Talking Past Each Other
This paper discusses the implications electronic dissemination for the peer-reviewed serial publication system. To make sense of this complex issue, it is helpful to view it from the perspective of the origins of the system and its three core functions, the ranking of scholarship, facilitating interactive communication among scholars, and creating a comprehensive archive of scholarly and scientific knowledge. Each of these core functions has diff…
Fitting the Means to the Ends
Curriculum evaluation plays an important role in substantive curriculum change. The experience of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) with evaluation processes developed for the new Integrated Medical Curriculum (IMC) illustrates how evaluation methods may be chosen to match the goals of the curriculum evaluation process. Quantitative data such as ratings of courses or scores on external exams are useful for comparing courses or assessi…
Is it Time to Take the Paper Out of Serial Publication
The ramifications of shifting from paper to electronic serial publication are discussed in light of the recent National Institutes of Health (NIH) proposal for a comprehensive electronic archive of peer-reviewed and preprint publications. The paper evaluates six concerns that have been expressed about the conversion to a purely electronic journal system and discusses the economic impact and growing tension among authors, publishers and librarians…
Validation of a Classroom Climate Inventory for Use at the Early Elementary Level
A classroom climate measure that can be used at the early elementary school level was validated on a sample of 129 children in five primary classes. This measure consists of five scales assessing aspects of the classroom social climate such as Satisfaction and Cohesiveness. Item analysis was used to identify items, the removal of which would improve internal consistency and discriminant validity of the five scales. Scales modified in this way wer…
