Burned Wood as a Cultural Marker? Ancient Ligneous Landscapes and Firewood Use at Bonneville Estates Rockshelter, Nevada, USA
Plant resources have been widely relied upon by past hunter-gatherer societies; their remains uncovered at archaeological sites can serve as precious archives of the lives of past humans. However, while faunal remains are generally well preserved, botanical materials are usually charred, and less commonly preserved under conditions of desiccation, imbibition or freezing. Bonneville Estates Rockshelter ( BER ), Nevada, was intermittently occupied …

Chemical analyses reveal dual functionality of Early Mesolithic birch tar at Krzyż Wielkopolski (Poland)
Birch bark tar played an important role as an adhesive in the European Middle Palaeolithic and Mesolithic with key practical functions. For the Mesolithic in northern Europe, tar is suggested to have a variety of functions, including decorative, on various artefacts such as amber beads, antler and bone objects. However, no chemical characterisation has been conducted to confirm the organic composition of such decorations. To address this gap, we …

Lifestyle Related Cancer Risk and Protective Behaviors Vary among a Convenient Sample of Physically Active, Young-to-Middle-Aged Adults 18–49
It is an assumption that physically active adults lead an overall healthy lifestyle. To examine this assumption, we administered a cross-sectional, web-based survey to a sample of young-to-middle-aged US adults between 18 and 49 who self-reported participation in at least one recreational sporting event in the past month. Logistic regressions were conducted to examine demographic characteristics associated with cancer risk and protective behavior…
Environment and Plant Use at La Tourasse (South-West France) at the Late Glacial–Holocene Transition
The aim of this study is to present new data on vegetation dynamics and plant collecting practices during the Late Glacial and the Early Holocene in southwestern France. La Tourasse cave is located in the Pyrenean piedmont plain, where the Azilian cultural complex was initially defined. The last excavations of the site took place in the 1980s and 1990s and the recovered materials are currently being studied or revisited from a multidisciplinary p…
Expedient and efficient: An Early Mesolithic composite implement from Krzyż Wielkopolski
The Northern European Mesolithic is well known for the manufacture of composite tools and weapons for specialised purposes. A composite implement recovered from the Early Holocene site of Krzyż Wielkopolski 7 in Poland, dated to the Preboreal/Boreal transition, raises questions about expediency versus efficiency in the fabrication of these artefacts. Here, the authors characterise its materials and production: a bone splinter mounted on a shaft o…
Back to Combe-Grèze (La Cresse, Aveyron): New data on the Neolithisation of the Grands Causses region, Southwestern France–abridged version
The small shelter of Combe-Grèze, located in a dolina of the Causse Noir plateau about ten kilometres northeast of Millau in Southwestern France, was first excavated in the second half of the 20th century, and more recently has been subject to new investigations by the authors of this contribution. The site was repeatedly occupied during the Holocene and has been widely referred to in neolithisation scenarios regarding the Mediterranean hinterlan…

The Mesolithic Site of Les Fieux (Miers, Lot): A hunting camp on the Gramat karst plateau
The Mesolithic site located in the western entrance of the cave of Les Fieux (Miers, Lot), excavated in the 1970’s by F. Champagne, has often been interpreted as a hunting camp. This hypothesis is mostly based on features of the lithic industry, which is largely dominated by weapon elements. The results of a multidisciplinary study of the Mesolithic assemblages now provide an opportunity to question the validity of this hypothesis. While the data…

Faune et flore des niveaux profonds de Shahi-Tump (Balochistan, Pakistan). Premiers résultats
At Shahi-Tump, a site excavated by the French Archaeological Mission to Makran (district of Kech-Makran, Baluchistan, Pakistan), the oldest occupational levels belong to an aceramic neolithic horizon. The first results obtained by the analysis of archaeozoological and archaeobotanical remains suggest nevertheless that we deal here with a phase immediately preceding the introduction of ceramics into this western part of Baluchistan. The exploitati…
