  • Reorganizing public value for city life in the Anthropocene

Open Access•Marta Gasparin, Martin Quinn et al.•ARTICLE•Organization•2024

Public value and city governance are fundamental notions in contemporary settings, but, currently conceived, they are not fit for the challenges presented by the proposed new epoch of geological time—the Anthropocene. Walking through the locked-down streets or calle of Venice, we face the sudden emptiness that starkly reveals the impact of human activity on the city and its waterways. Reflecting on the walk, our starting point is to problematize …

  • A conceptual approach to the tourist value co-creation

Open Access•Pedro Carvalho, Montserrat Díaz‐Méndez et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Tourism…•2023

In the last decades, several studies related to the Service-Dominant Logic approach were carried out, where the tourism industry is not an exception. As such, multiple works associated with this research stream have been developed, with a special focus on the tourist value co-creation. This article presents a conceptual model that aims to aggregate the various dimensions of customer value co-creation with its antecedent and consequent factors in …

    Open Access•Julie Tinson, Michael Saren et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Management•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 46

Drawing on interviews with twenty tourists at the National Wallace Monument in Stirling, Scotland, this case study uses the concept of personal nationalism to understand how national identity is interpreted and communicated in personal and (post) tourist space. It uses a narrative analysis of domestic and international tourists’ experiences to realise how heritage tourism sites could benefit from understanding individual meanings of a nation. The…

This positioning paper explains and develops the concept of marketplace exclusion, which has received little attention to date in the field of marketing and consumer research. Essentially the concept refers to the mechanisms through which certain individuals and communities are barred from the resources and opportunities provided by the market. Participation in the market and the accompanying rights and responsibilities that allow individuals to …

  • Performing identity

    Christina Goulding, Michael Saren•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2009•Cited by: 32•References: 34

The paper looks at the nature of gender identities within the gothic subculture, a subculture firmly rooted in objects of consumption and bonded together by a common fascination with the iconic figure of the vampire. We argue that the gothic scene is a site of praxis where accepted gender norms are challenged and alternative sexual politics are established through a variety of gendered performances. Based on the findings of a qualitative study co…

  • Baudrillard in the museum

    James Fitchett, James A Fitchett et al.•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Here we consider whether jean Baudrillard's theory of ‘sign value’ and ‘political economy of the sign’ offer a credible alternative to economic and utilitarian definitions of value. We begin by introducing the concept of value as it has been conventionally understood, proceeding to an introduction of Baudrillard's notion of ‘sign value’. Drawing on the findings of a recently conducted research project into museum visiting, we discuss whether'sign…
