We examined implicit or subconscious antecedents of CEO behavior and the effects on their direct subordinates. Specifically, we explored the relationships between (a) power, achievement, and affiliation motives and (b) charismatic, instrumental, and participative leadership behaviors. We then examined the influence of leadership types on three outcomes: follower motivation, performance, and teamwork. Based on analyses of interviews and surveys of…

  • Culture and Leadership Across the World: The GLOBE Book of in-Depth Studies of 25 Societies

David A Waldman, Mary Sully De Luque et al.•BOOK•Culture and Leadership Across the…•2007

Dutch GLOBE data are presented in this chapter with an overview of the history of Holland and later the Netherlands. From the Middle Ages onward, Dutch cities had substantial local autonomy, which led their educated citizens and merchants to rule themselves to a large extent. This relative autonomy stimulated independent thought and judgment, a climate that helped Protestantism to gain much ground. Foreign trade facilitated the rise of a liberal …

  • In the Eye of the Beholder: Cross Cultural Lessons in Leadership from Project GLOBE

Mansour Javidan, Peter W Dorfman et al.•ARTICLE•Academy of Management Perspectives•2006

Executive Overview Global leadership has been identified as a critical success factor for large multinational corporations. While there is much writing on the topic, most seems to be either general advice (i.e., being open minded and respectful of other cultures) or very specific information about a particular country based on a limited case study (do not show the soles of your shoes when seated as a guest in an Arab country). Both kinds of infor…

  • The Social Scientific Study of Leadership: Quo Vadis?

    Open Access•Robert J House, Ram N Aditya•ARTICLE•Journal of Management•1997

In this article, we review the history of the social scientific study of leadership and the prevailing theories of leadership that enjoy empirical support. We demonstrate that the development of knowledge concerning leadership phenomena has been truly cumulative and that much is currently known about leadership. We identify the contributions of the trait, behavioral, contingency and neocharismatic paradigms and the results of empirical research o…

  • The Motivational Effects of Charismatic Leadership: A Self-Concept Based Theory

Boas Shamir, Robert J House et al.•ARTICLE•Organization Science•1993

The empirical literature on charismatic or transformational leadership demonstrates that such leadership has profound effects on followers. However, while several versions of charismatic leadership theory predict such effects, none of them explains the process by which these effects are achieved. In this paper we seek to advance leadership theory by addressing this fundamental problem. We offer a self-concept based motivational theory to explain …

  • Presidential effectiveness and the leadership motive profile

    William D Spangler, Robert J House•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1991•Cited by: 4

As much as 59% of the variance in measures of presidential performance may be explained by individual differences in power (positive), affiliation (negative), achievement (negative), and number of nots appearing in presidential speeches and letters (positive). Motives and the interactions of power and nots independently predicted presidential performance. An overall index of the leadership motive syndrome did not predict presidential performance …

  • Expectancy Theory in Work and Motivation: Some Logical and Methodological Issues

    Open Access•Mabmoud A Wabba, Robert J House•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1974•Cited by: 10•References: 38

The development of expectancy theory is described and 14 alternative models of expectancy are contrasted. It is argued that the essence of the theory in work and motivation is the choice of work behavior. As such, it is shown that the present formulation of theory in industrial and organizational psychology, and consequently the empirical research based on it, ignores the rationality assumptions underlying this choice behavior. Some of these assu…
