Access-related factors and e-cigarette use among 11–17-year-olds: A thematic synthesis of European studies using the five dimensions of access
The rapid increase in e-cigarette use among young people is a public health concern that has led to new policies being discussed. This systematic review aimed to synthesise evidence on how access-related factors influence e-cigarette use among 11–17-year-olds in Europe, framing these factors using five dimensions of access (availability, affordability, accommodation, accessibility, acceptability) to inform thinking about policy approaches in the …
Linguistically Responsive Teaching in Multilingual Classrooms
Linguistically responsive teaching in multilingual classrooms refers to an approach to instruction that foregrounds the role of language across content areas and disciplinary classes, even in those contexts where multilingual students and explicit language goals are not considered to be the norm. Linguistically responsive instruction (LRI), developed largely in North American K‐12 and then, later, higher education contexts, is an approach that op…

A prospective cohort study examining exposure to incarceration and cardiovascular disease (Justice-Involved Individuals Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology – Justice study): A protocol paper
Our study will identify factors associated with CVD risk factor control among people released from incarceration. Our measurement of incarceration-related exposures, psychosocial factors, and clinical measures of cardiovascular risk will allow for identification of unique targets for intervention to modify CVD risk in this vulnerable population

University Faculty Beliefs About Emergent Multilinguals and Linguistically Responsive Instruction
Internationalization trends worldwide have brought more multilingual students into English‐medium university classrooms in the United States and elsewhere. Faculty across the disciplines increasingly have the dual challenge of developing both content and advanced academic language. Ample precedent in P–12 education suggests developing instructors’ knowledge of (a) students as language learners, (b) instructional techniques grounded in second lang…

What Would Napoleon Do: Historical, Fictional, and Counterfactual Characters
What Would Napoleon Do? Historical, Fictional, and Counterfactual Characters Catherine Gallagher (bio) The Emperor—this world soul—I saw riding through the city to a review of his troops; it is indeed a wonderful feeling to see such an individual who, here concentrated in a single point, sitting on a horse, reaches out over the world and dominates it. —G. The Body Economic: Life, Death, and Sensation in Political Economy and the Victorian Novel
The Body Economic revises the intellectual history of nineteenth-century Britain by demonstrating that political economists and the writers who often presented themselves as their literary antagonists actually held most of their basic social assumptions in common. Catherine Gallagher demonstrates that political economists and their Romantic and early-Victorian critics jointly relocated the idea of value from the realm of transcendent spirituality…
The Formalism of Military History

When Did the Confederate States of America Free the Slaves
There is a long tradition of counterfactual speculation about the alternative courses American history would have taken had the South won the Civil War. This essay traces counterfactual narratives of slave emancipation from a classic 1933 essay by Winston Churchill to a 2004 mockumentary by filmmaker Kevin Willmott
Theoretical Answers to Interdisciplinary Questions or Interdisciplinary Answers to Theoretical Questions
Theoretical Answers to Interdisciplinary Questions or Interdisciplinary Answers to Theoretical Questions? Catherine Gallagher (bio) Victorianists have long taken advantage of the ever-popular "studies" option in the humanities and social sciences, which was designed for inclusivity. "Studies" is often the marker of academic programs (science studies, American studies) rather than departments and so seems free of strict disciplinary restrictions; …
Police Intervention and the Repeat of Domestic Assault
We use the National Crime Victimization Survey to examine whether domestic violence is less likely to be repeated if it is reported to the police and if the offender is arrested. Our longitudinal analyses suggest that reporting has a fairly strong deterrent effect, whereas the effect of arrest is small and statistically insignificant. We find no support for the hypothesis that offenders retaliate when victims (rather than third parties) call the …

George Eliot: Immanent Victorian
Using Middlemarch as its primary instance, this essay argues that George Eliot's realism (and by extension nineteenth-century British realism generally) contains a tension between reference (to types of extradiegetic persons) and realization (which is aligned with the fictionality of novelistic characters). The dynamic of Eliot's novels involves the constant deviation of characters away fromtypes and toward fictional particularity, and it therefo…

Floating Signifiers of Britishness in the Novels of the Anti-Slave-Trade Squadron
When taken from Africa as a boy, Olaudah Equiano asked a fellow slave if the men transporting them “‘had no country but lived in this hollow place, the ship”’ (p. 34). Equiano’s question, reported as evidence of his childish naïvety, may now strike us as very sophisticated, anticipating as it does recent descriptions of the creation of Britain through the military and imperial mobilization of its constituent peoples. Britain, many would now agree…

There was something decidedly asymmetrical about interdisciplinary literary studies prior to the 1980s. The title of the MLA division devoted to the study of and society, Sociological Approaches to Literature, says a great deal about our recent past. Critics approached via sociological ideas concepts developed in a discipline that took as its object of inquiry. Obviously the relationship between and society must have been conceived of as intimate…

Response to Aronowitz and Ross
Stanley Aronowitz and Andrew Ross (Social Text, 30) draw opposite conclusions about the underlying theoretical position of my essay on Raymond Williams and cultural studies. Aronowitz infers that I hold to realist epistemology which would enforce rigid separation of referent and sign. He thinks I am plainly with the of to span representation and material practices. This is not so plain to Andrew Ross, who concludes more plausibly that I am post-s…
