Linguistically responsive teaching in multilingual classrooms refers to an approach to instruction that foregrounds the role of language across content areas and disciplinary classes, even in those contexts where multilingual students and explicit language goals are not considered to be the norm. Linguistically responsive instruction (LRI), developed largely in North American K‐12 and then, later, higher education contexts, is an approach that operates on the programmatic and instructional levels that use language‐supported instructional strategies to provide equitable outcomes for all learners.
