  • Geophysics of Lager Wick forced labour camp, Grouville, Jersey, Channel Islands

    Peter Master•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Archaeology•2016•References: 2

Three seasons of fieldwork at the forced labour camp of Lager Wick, Grouville, Jersey (2014–2016) employed resistivity, ground penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetic susceptibility to investigate areas of the camp. Resistivity and magnetic susceptibility produced the most useful results, whilst the GPR survey only revealed a modern pipe. The resistivity survey was undertaken in the south-west corner of the former camp close to the entrance gate pos…

  • Towards an Integrated Methodology for Assessing Rural Settlement Landscapes in the Belgian Lowlands

Open Access•W De Clercq, Philippe De Smedt et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Although the Belgian lowlands witnessed a dense rural occupation in Roman and especially in medieval times, the exact nature of the settlement patterns, the farms and the interaction with the landscape is still poorly understood archaeologically, both scientifically and from a heritage curatorship point of view. Archaeogeophysical research has remained relatively limited in this area. However, other prospection techniques such as aerial photograp…

  • From training ground to battlefield

    Open Access•Peter Master•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2009

Conflict Archaeology is a rapidly developing sub-discipline within the traditional field of archaeology and has only recently started to receive attention from professional archaeologists. Non-destructive methodologies such as the study of aerial photographs and the use of geophysical prospection techniques can provide a means of effective cultural resource management. Geophysics is beginning to play an important role in recording past landscapes…

  • From the air to beneath the soil – revealing and mapping great war trenches at Ploegsteert (Comines‐Warneton), Belgium

    Open Access•Peter Master, P Masters et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2009•Cited by: 9•References: 5

Recent military battlefield sites are often recorded by accident during geophysical investigations researching into earlier archaeological landscapes. The First World War (Great War) perhaps left its traces like no other war before or since in Europe. For the first time, a large area, some 16 ha in extent, has been surveyed over a modern conflict landscape. The authors have attempted to combine two remote sensing techniques: analysis of contempor…

  • Teaching the English Articles as a Binary System

    Peter Master•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•1990•Cited by: 5

The English article system can be taught as a binary division between classification (a and 0) and identification (the). All the other elements of article usage can be understood within this framework, allowing a one form/one function correspondence for a and the. Furthermore, the notions of classification and identification can be introduced as distinct concepts before the various rules for article usage are taught. This simplified schema is pre…

  • The Experimental Creation of a Pidgin Language

Peter Master, John H Schumann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pidgin and Creole…•1989

Over the past two years several research projects have been undertaken within the Applied Linguistics Program at UCLA to examine the early stages of pidginization. The idea was to create experimentally a pidgin language by having subjects memorize 250 words of a language they did not know and communicate with that lexicon for approximately 40 hours. A German Pidgin and a Farsi Pidgin were created. The experiments and subsequent analyses provided …

  • The Etiquette of Observing

    Peter Master•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•1983•Cited by: 1

The relationship between teacher and students is a highly personal one. For this reason, an observer, particularly an administrative one, can be an invasive presence. The responsibility lies on the observer to minimize this effect by consciously adopting a courteous and non-threatening demeanor
