  • Minderheitensprachen

    Brigitta Busch•CHAPTER•Handbuch Mehrsprachigkeit•2022

  • Language advocacy in times of securitization and neoliberalization

    Open Access•Mi-Cha Flubacher, Brigitta Busch•ARTICLE•Language Policy•2022•References: 7

In this contribution, we aim to address the following questions: What does it mean to do language advocacy in 2022? Under which conditions does it operate? What are the fights, aims, and challenges? On the one hand, answering these questions heavily depends on the political, social, cultural and linguistic context, as well as on the interests, stakes and positions of the advocacy actors. On the other, we argue that recent political economic trans…

  • Indexical borders

Open Access•Brigitta Busch, Jürgen Spitzmüller•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2021

This paper engages with the notion of the shibboleth, an indexically loaded, usually referentially indifferent set of (ideologically constructed) minimal pairs that is used in order to mark and perform social differentiation. We argue that the shibboleth is to be considered an interpretive (metapragmatic) phenomenon that operates on different sociolinguistic scales, notably the discursive scale (ideologies of communication), the performative scal…

  • The body image

    Open Access•Brigitta Busch•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 14

In the current revival of Gumperz’ notion of the verbal repertoire, which today is rather termed as communicative or semiotic repertoire, some scholars tend to locate repertoires with individual speakers whereas others see them primarily as emerging from particular spatial arrangements. What is often underestimated in both approaches is the importance of the bodily and emotionally lived experience of communicative interaction. This experience, ho…

In recent years, the intersections between, or entanglements of, local action and translocal patterns gained renewed interest in sociolinguistics. Received distinctions such asmicro/macroorpractice/structurehave been challenged and confronted with more granular concepts such associolinguistic scales. Consequently, established disciplinary orientations such asmicro/macroorqualitative/quantitative sociolinguisticshave also been questioned: rather t…

  • Message in a Bottle

    Open Access•Brigitta Busch•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2020

Linguistic studies related to trauma are primarily interested in how traumatic events can be verbalized. This article, in contrast, focusses on ways of translating a traumatic experience into forms of symbolization that do not report on what happened but rather foreground the bodily and emotional sensations linked to (re)living such experiences. In discussing such forms of scenic presentation and condensation, I will build, inter alia, on Wittgen…

  • Categorizing Languages and Speakers

    Brigitta Busch•ARTICLE•Diversité urbaine•2020•References: 6

This article examines how census data are processed by statistical offices. It first investigates how the language categories displayed in language statistics are actually elaborated. It then considers the mechanisms by which speakers are assigned to specific language categories. It addresses the language ideologies underlying both these processes and the ways in which a certain view of the world is thus reproduced and reinforced. Finally, it dis…

  • Language and Trauma

    Open Access•Brigitta Busch, Tim Mcnamara•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2020•Cited by: 20•References: 7

This paper introduces the conceptual framing of studies of trauma. It considers how, on the one hand, applied linguistics may contribute to this study, responding to the suggestion that trauma 'can be best understood through plural, multi-disciplinary perspectives' (Luckhurst 2008: 214), and, on the other hand, the extent to which linguistic studies of trauma can contribute to a better understanding of what Coupland and Coupland (1997: 117) have …

  • Sprachreflexion und Diskurs

Brigitta Busch•CHAPTER•Handbuch Sprache Im Urteil Der…•2019

  • Expanding the Notion of the Linguistic Repertoire

    Brigitta Busch•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2015

The aim of this article is to explore the connections between the concepts of the linguistic repertoire, of language ideologies, and of lived experience of language. In foregrounding the concept of Spracherleben, the lived experience of language, this article contributes to the ongoing debate on how to rethink the notion of the linguistic repertoire considering that current phenomena such as increased mobility, migration, or participation in tran…

  • The Linguistic Repertoire Revisited

    Brigitta Busch•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2012•Cited by: 168•References: 9

This article argues for the relevance of poststructuralist approaches to the notion of a linguistic repertoire and introduces the notion of language portraits as a basis for empirical study of the way in which speakers conceive and represent their heteroglossic repertoires. The first part of the article revisits Gumperz's notion of a linguistic repertoire, and then considers the challenge to the concept represented by the conditions of super-dive…

  • The political potential of multi-accentuality in the exhibition title ‘gastarbajteri

Martina Böse, Brigitta Busch•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2007•References: 6

This article explores the multi-accentuality of the sign ‘gastarbajteri’, used as title word in an exhibition on labour migration that took place in Vienna, Austria, in 2004. Based on an ethnographic study of the exhibition, it addresses a variety of readings of this word, both at the level of production and reception. The analysis of texts shows, firstly, the divergent rationales of the two agents who cooperated as exhibition producers, the mino…

  • Changing Media Spaces

    Open Access•Brigitta Busch•CHAPTER•Language Ideologies, Policies and…•2006

For many years a central role has been attributed to the media l in the rise of standard and national languages (Innis 1997). Recent developments, however, may well be contributing to the de-centring of national and standard languages. The monolingual habitus of media which address a national audience, their normalizing and standardizing role, is not an inherent feature of particular mass media technologies, but is rather due to the way media tec…
