    Michelle A Mckinley•ARTICLE•The William and Mary Quarterly•2024

This article explores cases in which slaveholders, enslaved and freed people, and courts battled over the customary interpretation of the rights of wage-earning slaves in seventeenth-century Andalucía. Throughout the Spanish Empire, enslaved people could purchase their freedom through the processes of cortación (later known as coartación ) and ransom ( rescate ). Este número especial de Historia y Sociedad presenta a sus lectores evidencia y análisis sobre la naturaleza ambigua de las vivencias jurídicas de muchos esclavizados en Hispanoamérica. • Urban Slavery in Colonial Mexico

    Open Access•Michelle A Mckinley•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2019

This is a beautifully rendered, deeply engaged study of slavery in Puebla de los Angeles. Puebla is a city famous for its mole poblano, Baroque architecture and picturesque ceramic tiles—but not for its enslaved Afro-descendants and Asian historical presence. Indeed, as Pablo Miguel Sierra Silva points out, while most Poblanos know about the saintly china poblana, ‘it has never been explained to [them] why she was a slave in Puebla’ in the sevent…

  • Bianca Premo. The Enlightenment on Trial

    Open Access•Michelle A Mckinley•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

The litigiousness of dependents in the Iberian empire is a subject of prolific scholarship. Enslaved peoples, widows, indigenous and Andean subjects, disgruntled caciques, as well as petty nobles and wealthy merchants demonstrated a passion for prolonged and convoluted litigation. Reams of paper shuttled back and forth from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas, linking the two in a contiguous spatio-legal universe with a plethora of laws and leg…

  • Fractional Freedoms

    Open Access•Michelle A Mckinley•BOOK•Fractional Freedoms•2016

Fractional Freedoms explores how thousands of slaves in colonial Peru were able to secure their freedom, keep their families intact, negotiate lower self-purchase prices, and arrange transfers of ownership by filing legal claims. Through extensive archival research, Michelle A. McKinley excavates the experiences of enslaved women whose historical footprint is barely visible in the official record. She complicates the way we think about life under…

  • Illicit Intimacies

    Open Access•Michelle A Mckinley•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2014•Cited by: 4

This article examines the ways that plebeian women confessed to concubinary relationships in seventeenth-century Lima. Part One reviews complaints brought by casta and enslaved concubines to enforce matrimonial promises. Part Two analyzes the imprecise laws and policies of the canonists on concubinage. Part Three considers the Church’s inquisitorial function in policing interethnic intimacies, given the virtual synonymity of illegitimacy and conc…

This article joins a long-standing conversation among slavery scholars regarding the tensions that emerged from the legal status of slaves as property and as persons. • Planning Other Families

    Michelle A Mckinley, Michelle Mckinley•ARTICLE•Identities•2003
