Back to Basics in Measuring Lexical Diversity: Too Simple to Be True
Measuring lexical diversity in texts that have different lengths is problematic because length has a significant effect on the number of types a text contains, thus hampering any comparison. Treffers-Daller et al. (2018) recommended a simple solution, namely counting the number of types in a section of a given length that was extracted from the middle of each of the texts to be analysed. By applying this approach to second language essays, the au…
Measuring Lexical Diversity in Texts: The Twofold Length Problem
The impact of text length on the estimation of lexical diversity has captured the attention of the scientific community for more than a century. Numerous indices have been proposed, and many studies have been conducted to evaluate them, but the problem remains. This methodological review provides a critical analysis not only of the most commonly used indices in language learning studies, but also of the length problem itself, as well as of the me…

Improving Text Segmentation Using Latent Semantic Analysis: A Reanalysis of Choi, Wiemer-Hastings, and Moore (2001)
Choi, Wiemer-Hastings, and Moore (2001) proposed to use Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) to extract semantic knowledge from corpora in order to improve the accuracy of a text segmentation algorithm. By comparing the accuracy of the very same algorithm, depending on whether or not it takes into account complementary semantic knowledge, they were able to show the benefit derived from such knowledge. In their experiments, semantic knowledge was, howev…

Toward Automatic Determination of the Semantics of Connectives in Large Newspaper Corpora
We explored the possibility of using automatic techniques to analyze the use of backward causal connectives in large Dutch newspaper corpora. With the help of 2 techniques, Latent Semantic Analysis and Thematic Text Analysis, the contexts of more than 14,000 connectives were studied. The method of analysis is described. We found that differences that have been suggested in the literature via hand-based analyses between these types of connectives …

Segmentation markers as trace and signal of discourse structure
The role of temporal segmentation markers in discourse processing
Recent studies have shown that temporal expressions like around 2 o'clock and then are used by speakers and writers to signal thematic shift and that and is used to signal continuity in narratives. This article focuses on the comprehension function of these markers. The role of the markers was investigated by measuring the availability of words from the preceding text. Results from three experiments suggest that temporal markers modify the availa…
Time, space, and action: Exploring the narrative structure and its linguistic marking
In a highly specific field of the study of discourse, two experiments were conducted to analyze the principles that determine the structure of narratives and the use of elements that highlight that structure. In both, subjects received ordered lists of statements that described a person's activities during an afternoon. In the first experiment, groups of subjects performed one of four tasks using these lists. Some subjects rated the similarity of…
Type A behaviour pattern: Specific coronary risk factor or general disease‐prone condition
While the association between Type A behaviour pattern and coronary heart disease (CHD) has been abundantly investigated, the question of the specificity of this association remains virtually unexplored. The present study addressed this question by examining, in a sample of 1949 male and female adults, the relationship between JAS Type A measurement and self‐reported diseases (i.e. CHD, scarlatina, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, diseases of the li…
