Eu invoco descrições de cursos publicados escritos por professor…

The Handbook of Public Sociology presents a comprehensive look at every facet of public sociology in theory and practice. It pays particular attention to how public sociology can complement more traditional types of sociological practice to advance both the …

    Open Access•Michael Decesare•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 20

A neglected part of the history of teaching sociology is the history of teaching high school sociology. The American Sociological Association's centennial in 2005 affords sociologists an opportunity to reflect on the teaching of sociology–anywhere and everywhere that it happens. In the spirit of contributing to the history of teaching sociology in the United States, this paper outlines the roughly 95-year history of the teaching of high school so…

  • The High School Sociology Teacher

    Open Access•Michael Decesare•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2005•Cited by: 7•References: 6

High school teachers of sociology have long been neglected by academic sociologists and the ASA. Recent developments are encouraging, however. In 2001, the ASA appointed a Task Force on the Advanced Placement Course for Sociology in High School, and Teaching Sociology has published three articles on high school sociology since that year. Still, there is a dire need for research on the characteristics and experiences of teachers themselves, and fo…

  • The Lesson to Be Learned: The past Troubles and Future Promise of Teaching High School Sociology

    Michael Decesare, Michael A Decesare•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2002•Cited by: 9

High school sociology has historically been and largely continues to be neglected by the discipline's professional organizations and by academic sociologists. The few past reforms of high school sociology-such as the SRSS project during the 1960s and early 1970s-were aimed at course content and instructional materials; they have failed. I argue that a new approach is necessary, one that focuses on improving high school sociology teacher training.…

  • Public attitudes toward euthanasia and suicide for terminally ill persons: 1977 And 1996

    Michael Decesare, Michael A Decesare•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•2000•References: 19

This study replicates Singh's (1979) "classic" examination of correlates of euthanasia and suicide attitudes. The purposes of the current study were to assess (1) changes in public attitudes toward these voluntary termination of life practices, and (2) changes in the effects on attitudes of selected independent variables. I found Americans' approval of both euthanasia and suicide in 1996 to be higher than that in 1977. The increase in the approva…
