Social media identities of African immigrant youth: Implications for educators
Despite their growing numbers and influence, there is limited research on African immigrant youth in the U.S. The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine the multiple identities that first and 1.5 generation African immigrant college students enact in their online worlds. By developing a deeper understanding of how these youths enact and perceive their online identities, educators and administrators may be better able to support their edu…
Data-Mining Journals and Books: Using the Science of Networks to Uncover the Structure of the Educational Research Community
To investigate the process through which the educational research community can become more vibrant and cohesive, the authors of this article ask: How can the numerous networks that constitute the field of educational research be analyzed in an effort to understand and influence the pattern through which knowledge of educational phenomena are exchanged? The authors contend that understanding these complex networks will illuminate the dynamic proc…
Rites and Wrongs: Institutional Explanations for the Student Course-Scheduling Process in Urban High Schools
Urban high schools operating in complex social and organizational environments are likely to face high levels of uncertainty that may make it difficult to manage core organizational processes efficiently and that may lead to tensions among technical logics of action and institutionalized beliefs about schooling. Such tensions can be observed in the course-scheduling process, one of the most important administrative routines supporting the core in…

Lawrence, who taught seventh and eighth graders, found that school was " mean and miserable-and I hate conflict.I was never born to command ... .Think of a quivering greyhound sent to mind a herd of pigs and you see my teaching."No doubt Lawrence left teaching for some of the same reasons that teachers have always quit. The stresses associated…

Aaron M. Pallas, Gary Natriello, Edward L. McDill, The Changing Nature of the Disadvantaged Population: Current Dimensions and Future Trends, Educational Researcher, Vol. 18, No. 5 (Jun. - Jul., 1989), pp. 16-22
On the Right Track? Curriculum and Academic Achievement
In an earlier study (Alexander, Natriello, and Pallas 1985), we compared the gains in academic achievement of high school graduates against those of dropouts over a two-year period. Baseline data were procured during the sophomore year, when all were still in school. Two years later, these same youngsters were retested. About 14 percent of the retested youngsters had left school in the interval between testing sessions. The performance on the sec…

A Population at Risk: Potential Consequences of Tougher School Standards for Student Dropouts
This paper considers the potential impact of the recent recommendations for raising standards in American schools on a population at risk, that is, those students likely to leave school prior to high school graduation. The paper proceeds by (1) presenting a systematic review of the empirical evidence on factors that predict dropping out, (2) synthesizing and explicating the recent recommendations for raising standards in American schools, (3) con…

New Teachers for Urban Schools: The Contribution of the Provisional Teacher Program in New Jersey
Performance Standards, Student Effort on Homework, and Academic Achievement
Recent reports on the state of American schools have focused on the standards for student performance. Using a sample of 12,146 students from 20 public high schools, we estimate the effects of teachers', parents', and peers' standards on student effort and achievement while controlling for the effects of student background factors. Teachers', parents', and peers' standards each have a positive and significant effect on the time students spend on …

Bringing Behavior Back In: The Effects of Student Characteristics and Behavior on the Classroom Behavior of Teachers
Two studies were designed to investigate the effects of student characteristics on teacher reports of their classroom behavior. Unlike earlier studies of differences in teacher behavior associated with differences in student characteristics, these studies also examined the effects of student behavior, represented by hypothetical classroom problems presented to teachers. Our analysis suggests that teacher behavior is affected more by immediate stu…

Teachers’ Perceptions of the Frequency of Evaluation and Assessments of Their Effort and Effectiveness
This paper examines the relationship between teacher perceptions of the frequency of evaluation activity and assessments of their effort and effectiveness. Drawing on the theory of evaluation and the exercise of authority developed by Dornbusch and Scott (1975) , we proposed two hypotheses concerning the impact of evaluation processes on teacher leverage, the ratio of effectiveness to effort. First we predicted a curvilinear relationship between …
