The reuse of ancient tuff blocks in early medieval construction in Rome
This paper analyzes the reuse of ancient tuff blocks in early medieval architecture in Rome, in both papal and private structures. The blocks are a well-known phenomenon, but they have not yet received any focused study. Short discussions in earlier scholarship have typically described them in utilitarian terms. I first identify a pattern of targeted reuse in papal building projects. I then argue that they would also have had symbolic value for a…

Mercury on the Esquiline
In this article, we present a reexamination of a shrine to Mercury preserved in situ in the basement of the apartment building at Via San Martino ai Monti 8, part of the ancient Clivus Suburanus, on the Esquiline Hill in Rome. A new campaign of documentation has yielded many new insights about the character, chronological development, and historical importance of this local shrine. We analyze the date and appearance of the republican shrine and c…
A Domus in the Subura of Rome from the Republic Through Late Antiquity
The crypt of the church of Santi Sergio e Bacco on Piazza Madonna dei Monti in Rome preserves the partial remains of a Roman structure showing multiple building phases. Tuff piers approximately 5 m tall belong to the atrium of a republican atrium house, with the surrounding rooms reflected in the adjacent spaces of the modern basement. During the Imperial period, this atrium was closed off, and a bath complex was added in adjacent rooms. The room…

Urban American Indian elders are a population whose well- being has not been fully examined. This study focuses on a small convenience sample of urban Indian elders in the Rochester, New York, area who are activ…

Part 2 uses a developmental approach in providing culturally competent care across the life …
