Sonic touristification and the transformation of Lisbon’s urban ambiances
This article introduces ‘sonic touristification’ as an analytical framework for examining how tourism reshapes urban soundscapes. Drawing on ethnographic research (2012–2024) across three Lisbon neighborhoods, we identify three mechanisms through which tourism alters sonic environments: thematization (commodifying local sounds), equalization (filtering unwanted sounds), and production of new tourist-driven ambiances. Our multi-sited ethnography c…
Gamifying urban nature experiences
Nature experiences are important drivers of environmental awareness and responsibility, as literature has shown that people who feel a greater connectedness with nature tend to be more active in conservation action. Despite this, recent studies have shown that nature contact within urban space is in decline, which has led scholars to call for novel ways to reconnect urban dwellers with nature. With this in mind, this paper explores the potential …
Improving the Walkability of High Streets: A Participatory Approach Using Biosensing and Scenario Co-Creation
In the 21st century, there has been a concerted effort to undo the automobile-centric urban planning of the 20th century, which has resulted in degraded public spaces that deter citizen permanence. However, the perpetuation of quantitative-based methodologies, along with low public participation, has led to underused public spaces. To create more appealing spaces, the methods need to feature more public involvement. This article addresses this ga…
The right to atmosphere
The growing recognition of atmospheric inequalities is leading to calls for the right to atmosphere. However, as a consequence of the diverse conceptions of what the atmosphere is and the diversity of atmosphere-related environmental and social advocacy, the right to atmosphere has been conceived in fundamentally contradictory ways, and the path to its achievement remains unclear. In this article, I propose an agonistic approach to the right to a…

Hauntological atmospheres of the UK high street: Consuming Manchester's Halloween in the City
The thermalscapes of urban consumption: Informal shading practices in a hot Brazilian city centre
Urban scholarship has thoroughly demonstrated that the sensory atmosphere is a crucial element for the consumer experience in urban space. Despite this, the impact of extreme heat on urban consumption areas has thus far received little attention, despite recent studies on thermal comfort showing that heat can significantly affect the use of urban public space. With this in mind, this paper seeks to contribute to the emerging field of research on …
Communicating the Urban Experience through Biosensing: A Participatory Approach
Advances in biosensing technologies have led to the commercialization of novel lightweight wearable devices, which have been praised by urban scholars for offering the possibility to quantify emotions in real-world settings, something that had proven to be very challenging until now. Although many studies mix biosensing with qualitative methods to provide a clearer picture of what physiological data might mean in terms of emotions, there has been…
The paradox of atmosphere: Tourism, heritage, and urban liveability
This paper discusses the paradox of atmosphere in urban tourism and reflects on how atmospheric production can become a tool to improve urban liveability. I draw on atmospheric theory and literature on tourism and atmospheres to describe the link between urban atmospheres and tourism experiences, and I draw on the literature on urban touristification to demonstrate the impacts of tourism activities in urban atmospheres and liveability. I contend …

Digital storytelling and hopeful last chance tourism experiences
ast chance tourism, which can be described as the practice of tour-ism in environmentally damaged or threatened spaces, is an emerg-ing trend that has been considered problematic due to the pressure that it places on already fragile environments. this article explores the possibilities of turning last chance tourism experiences into hope-ful tourism experiences, by creating emotionally driven last chance tourism experiences in controlled and safe…
Soundmaking and the making of worlds and territories: A case of street football games in Quinta da Piedade
This paper presents a geoethnographic study of street football games in Lisbon's Metropolitan Area. The study explores how soundmaking is used by young people to generate micro-worlds and territories in street football games in urban space. The insights of the study contribute toward the field of sonic geographies by demonstrating that directing our focus away from the act of listening can provide novel insights into the role that sound plays in …
A Sonic Anthropocene. Sound Practices in a Changing Environment (II)
Art and anthropology offer a wide variety of methodological tools and discursive arguments that expand how ecological discourse can be framed in current times. Intervening directly upon the field as a site of direct survey, these disciplines have woven common paths in recent decades, as contemporary artistic practices have become research-based, shifting the position of the creator to an investigative role committed to societal change and the obs…

The Enactment of Fast and Slow Time Regimes by Urban Retail and Consumer Services
This article discusses the enactment of conflicting time regimes in contemporary urban retail and consumer services. We draw on the theories of time–space compression, social acceleration, and the fast–slow dichotomy to argue that retail and consumer services act on urban life by enacting two apparently conflicting time regimes: fast time and slow time. Although retail and consumer services are not able to establish urban time regimes by themselv…
Luso-Brazilian geographies? The making of epistemic communities in semi-peripheral academic human geography
This article provides the first overview of the dialogues between Brazilian and Portuguese geography throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. We expand current debates about marginal geographies in the growing field of global histories of geography by arguing that the Luso-Brazilian case reveals how international epistemic communities can be formed between semiperipheral geographic communities. We call attention to the role that science funding pl…
The territoriality of atmosphere: Rethinking affective urbanism through the collateral atmospheres of Lisbon’s tourism
This paper draws on a year‐long ethnographic observation of the tourism‐related practices of atmospheric production in Lisbon (Portugal) and the protests against its unintended consequences. We expand the literature on atmospheric design, staging, and performance by introducing the concept of collateral atmospheres to describe the “other” atmospheres that emerge in the spaces and times beyond produced atmospheres
Poetry as a resonant method for multi-sensory research
This article explores the potential of poetry for attuning to and expressing resonance in multi-sensory geographies. I argue that poetic inquiry can provide novel ways to address sensory geographies, by shifting the focus from individual senses to a more integrated understanding of how sensory phenomena resonates across bodies and spaces. By doing this, poetry also becomes a resonant method that allows one to merge different subjectivities and ex…
A Sonic Anthropocene. Sound Practices in a Changing Environment
The introduction to this double issue entitled "A Sonic Anthropocene: Sound Practices in a Changing Environment" explores some of the concepts and methodological issues that inform our understanding of what we call the "Sonic Anthropocene". We argue that incorporating practices of listening and aural documentation that register the transformations in the acoustic landscape creates a space of potential for examining the increasing impact of human …
Cyborg urbanization beyond the human: The construction and ruination of the Matinha gasworks site
Work on cyborg urbanization has unveiled the way in which the city is produced through hybridizations of the human and non-human. However, less attention has been given to the ways by which non-human actors entangle each other without human mediation. On the other hand, literature on urban ruination has explored the agency of the non-human in landscape transformation, however few works have established the link between the processes of ruination …
A podcast on urban ruins, or the aural weaving of theory and field
Making a podcast can be a way to weave together concepts, theories or mere thoughts about places, and the aural sensory experience of being in place. In this short article, we present the NoVOID podcast, an audio podcast on ruins and vacant lands that combines interviews with scholars from various fields of knowledge and field recordings in various sites related to the subjects of the interviews. We discuss four possibilities for generating more-…
The first impression in the urban sonic experience: Transitions, attention, and attunement
The objective of this study is to understand the phenomenology of moments of transition between sonic environments in the urban context and conceptualize the role they play in the attunement of the body to urban spaces. It has been argued that transitions between different environments tend to be moments when sonic perception and feedback are enhanced and, as moments of interruption, they play a significant role in how we attune to urban places. …

Artistic Practices and the Redistribution of the Sensible in Largo do Chiado: Attention, Corporeal Isles, Visceral Politics
The objective of this paper is to explore how different artistic practices work to alter the distribution of the senses, and consequently, the disposition, processes and practices of the situated surplus of urban places. While it has been acknowledged that artistic performances in public space generate specific appropriations of the urban environment, the role that specific sensorial channels play in these events is still underexplored. Drawing u…
Sonic geographies: Themes, concepts, and deaf spots
This article poses a straightforward question: What has geography been listening to? Sonic geographies have been established as a relevant subfield in Human Geography in the last decades. During this period, a significant amount of work has been published, but there are still few reviews of these works, and most of them focus solely on Anglophone geography. In this article, I attempt to address this gap by providing an overview of the themes and …

The pace of life and temporal resources in a neighborhood of an edge city
Recently, the phenomenon of social acceleration, which has profound impacts on everyday life, has attracted some attention from social scientists. At the same time, an increased engagement with social practices that are related to slowing down has also been highlighted, thereby unveiling an inherent tension between fast and slow times in contemporary societies. However, little attention has been paid to how fast and slow times are spatially dispe…
Collapsed Rhythms: The Impact of Urban Change in the Everyday Life of Elders
This article discusses the impact of urban change in everyday life rhythms. Recently, urban space has been described and analyzed as polyrhythmic, being a congregation of diverse movements by different agents. While the role of materiality in this dynamic is recognized, the impact of urban change in everyday life rhythms is still underexplored. Seeing urban rhythms as comprised by affective relationships, I analyze how Lisbon’s recent macro-level…
Experiencing virtual places: Insights on the geographies of sim racing
Virtual spaces have emerged as everyday life spaces in contemporary societies. Very quickly, they have gained a cultural role in the daily life of their users, as these new territories gain their own communities, ideologies, and spatializations. However, little is known about how place is experienced in these different realms. This study seeks to understand place experience in virtual spaces, taking the sim racing virtual spaces as a case study a…
