Dietary Diversity and Associated Factors Among Pregnant Women in Central South Africa
Poor dietary diversity (DD) in pregnancy can lead to nutritional deficiencies, resulting in poor maternal and neonatal outcomes. This cross-sectional study assessed the DD of 681 pregnant women in a tertiary hospital in South Africa. DD, household food insecurity and sociodemographic status were assessed using the MDD-W indicator, HFIAS and a questionnaire. 99.4% of participants consumed starchy staples, while only 7.9%, 10.6% and 13.5% consumed …

On Justice, Pedagogy, and Decolonial(Izing) Praxis
This paper goes beyond — transcends — “pedagogy as justice,” recognizing that justice, particularly in these present times, may not be enough. Its wager is with pedagogies of and for life ; pedagogies that plant and cultivate, that push and enable other modes of living, despite the capitalist‐modern‐colonial‐racist system, beyond the system, and in the system's margins, borders, fissures, and cracks. These pedagogies, as Catherine Walsh argues he…
The genesis of the PM-JAY health insurance scheme in India
Many countries are using health insurance to advance progress towards universal health coverage (UHC). India launched the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) health insurance scheme in 2018. We examine the political economy context around PM-JAY policy formulation, by examining the perspectives of policy stakeholders shaping decisions around the reform. More specifically, we focus on early policy design at the central (national) level. We u…
Rising Up, Living On
Catherine E. Walsh examines social struggles for survival in societies deeply marked by the systemic violence of coloniality to identify practices that may cultivate the possibility of living otherwise
Ancestral plantings. Knowledge in the AfroPacific
In this text, Juan García Salazar and Catherine Walsh draw from and extend portions of their conversations begun a number of years ago about the sowing and re-sowing of knowledge and life in the communities of the Colombo-Ecuadorian region-territory of the AfroPacific. The conversation invokes and thinks with a third voice, that of Grandfather Zenón, considered the Grandfather of all those beings who reside in this territory. It is Zenón’s voice …
The basics of determining the speech of national traditions in literature
This article is dedicated to the study of the communicative organization of the French artistic dialogical discourse, with the aim of analyzing the structural and semantic components of this type of discourse, as well as the factors that determine their choice and interactions under conditions of concrete achievement. The object of the present study is the communicative structure of the dialogical texts of French prose of the end of the 20th and …
(Re)existence in times of de-existence
How are we to think about pedagogy and education in these present times when existence itself is in tension and question? As the pandemics of COVID-19, systemic racism, capitalist greed, and land-based plundering, displacement, and dispossession work together to reconfigure power and, relatedly, formal education, most especially in the Global South, what might it mean to think from and shift our gaze toward the decolonial ‘cracks’? How do these ‘…
Constructing Experts Without Expertise
Economic news uses fiscal experts to construct discourse about government deficits, debt, spending, and services. Most previous studies have assumed that knowledge and understanding are key to the construction of economic expertise in news. This study undertakes a quantitative analysis to discover how the British press represents three high-profile fiscal experts: the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), the National Audit Office (NAO), and the Of…

On Decoloniality
In On Decoloniality Walter D. Mignolo and Catherine E. Walsh explore the hidden forces of the colonial matrix of power, its origination, transformation, and current presence, while asking the crucial questions of decoloniality's how, what, why, with whom, and what for. Interweaving theory-praxis with local histories and perspectives of struggle, they illustrate the conceptual and analytic dynamism of decolonial ways of living and thinking, as wel…
Protesting Too Much
How did UK political elites publicly represent the economy after the Financial Crash? In his budget speeches, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alastair Darling (2007–2010), talked about finance and mortgages much more, and taxation much less, than one would expect by comparing him to other chancellors. With his rhetoric he constructed a vigorous defence of the financial sector and mortgage market, and described limited technical reforms comfortably. …

Affirmative action(ing)s and postneoliberal movement in South America and Ecuador
In South America, a region with one of the highest levels of racial and income inequality in the world, race-based affirmative action is newly visible and forcefully emergent. This text explores affirmative action's manifestation, conceptualization, and expression most especially in the region's progressive states, in governments that purport to break with neoliberalism and construct different social, political, and economic orders. Its concern i…

U Preliminary results from a study the author is currently conducting in an urban area of western Massachusetts demonstrate that most Puerto Rican children have difficulty relating the English language sociocultural reality to that of their native language and home. As Elam (1972) explains, differing rates of language learning act as cues to the general level of a child's emotional adjustment and the resolution of cultural identification and conf…
