The History of Child Psychology as Seen through Handbook Analysis
An analysis of handbooks of child psychology published from 1931 to 1983 was undertaken to assess various trends. There has been a striking increase in the number of words, chapters, authors cited, and mean references per chapter for each succeeding handbook. The shift away from descriptive content has continued, with growing emphasis on theoretical and analytical treatments. The latest volume also features metatheoretical analyses. The emphasis …

Personality and Memory Correlates of Intellectual Functioning in Adulthood
Assessment of 180 college students at three ages, 17–23 years, 37–43 years, and 61–80 years, examined (1) the relative availability of Piagetian formal reasoning concepts, (2) the relationship of these formal reasoning performances to Horn and Cattell’s psychometric theory of general fluid and crystallized intelligence, and (3) developmental patterns among standardized intelligence tests, logical reasoning, immediate memory span, and selected per…

Classification and Seriation Instruction and Logical Task Performance in the Preschool
The efficacy of small group instructional programs in classificatory, seriation, and combined class/series skills was evaluated for a sample of 60 urban, middle-class 4- to 5-year-old children in a transfer of training design. Significant specific transfer effects were found for the seriation instructional condition whereas little differences were found for the classification, verbal intelligence, and far transfer conservation task measures. Sex …

A Training Procedure for Acquisition of Piaget's Conservation of Quantity
This study represents an initial investigation of the relationship between logical, pre-requisite operations and Piaget's conservation tasks. The hypothesis considered special training on multiple classification, multiple relations, and reversibility, as a means of inducing conservation acquisition or improvement. Twenty nursery school children between the ages of 4.3 and 5 with I.Qs. over 130 were assigned to training and control groups. Ten of …
