  • Understanding the training needs of department chairs

Shahnaz Aziz, Morell E Mullins et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2005•Cited by: 6•References: 21

Little empirical research has focused specifically on the process of identifying comprehensive training needs for department chairs and school directors in public universities. A case study is presented to demonstrate the systematic design and implementation of a program to comprehensively assess the training needs of department chairs and school directors in a public university. Findings from a six‐step process revealed that budgets and funding,…

  • Issues and Strategies for Reducing the Length of Self‐report Scales

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Stanton, Evan F Sinar et al.•ARTICLE•Personnel Psychology•2002

Greater understanding of the complex interrelationships among work‐relevant constructs has increased the number of constructs on organizational surveys. Good psychometric practice also dictates the use of multiple items per construct. The net result has been longer surveys. Longer surveys take more time to complete, tend to have more missing data, and have higher refusal rates than short surveys. Arguably, then, techniques for reducing the length…

  • Development of a Compact Measure of Job Satisfaction: The Abridged Job Descriptive Index

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Stanton, Evan F Sinar et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2002

The Job Descriptive Index is a popular measure of job satisfaction with five subscales containing 72 items. A national sample ( n = 1,534) and a sample of university workers ( n = 636) supported development of an abridged version of the Job Descriptive Index (AJDI) containing a total of 25 items. A systematic scale-reduction technique was employed with the first sample to decide which items to retain in each scale. The abridged subscales were the…

  • A General Measure of Work Stress: The Stress in General Scale

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Stanton, William K Balzer et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2001

The present study focused on the development and validation of scores on the Stress in General scale. Three diverse samples of workers ( n = 4,322, n = 574, n = 34) provided psychometric and validity evidence. All evidence converged on the existence of two distinct subscales, each of which measured a different aspect of general work stress. The studies also resulted in meaningful patterns of correlations with stressor measures, a physiological me…

As part of a managerial role-play exercise, subjects were required to rate an employee's performance. Audiotaped interactions of the ratee and customers were manipulated to reflect either good or poor performance. In addition, the ratee's coworker provided performance informati…

  • The Many Meanings of Religiousness: A Policy‐Capturing Approach

    Open Access•Kenneth I Pargament, Mark S Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1995

This article reports the results of two policy‐capturing studies that investigated individual differences in the meaning of religiousness. Policy capturing requires judges to respond to a large number of hypothetical scenarios or profiles that differ along a number of potentially relevant cues or attributes. Multiple regression analyses are then conducted to ascertain which cues are influencing each judge's responses. For both studies, 100 profil…
