Emerging themes in the Identifying Successful STARTS Methodologies project and exhibition
In 2019 a team of multi-disciplinary researchers undertook a research project entitled Identifying Successful STARTS Methodologies (ISSM) (2019-2021) in order to analyze the innovative and collaborative strategies utilized by the global Science, Technology and Arts (STARTS) Prize Winners and nominees. The aim was to identify and articulate successful STARTS Methodologies through a series of interviews and in-depth case studies of the recognized p…
Woolmington in Context: The Excavation of a Case
The 1935 judgment in Woolmington v Director of Public Prosecutions established the ‘golden thread’ principle that, in general, the prosecution bears the burden of proof in criminal trials. This is the ‘cardinal principle of the criminal law’, not just in England and Wales, but right across the common law world. It is a principle that is now largely taken for granted, but when Woolmington was decided, it represented a sharp and largely unexpected …
Exploring the Third Space in Art-Science: The Identifying Successful STARTS Methodologies Project
During a series of interviews undertaken in Identifying Successful STARTS Methodologies (2019–2021), a research project that analyzed strategies utilized by recent STARTS Prize winners and nominees, a number of the artists and scientists described having needed to build a “third space,” or to meet on “another plane,” in order to communicate and find a common language for art-science collaborations. The project team, from University of Wolverhampt…
The good character ‘backstop’: Directions, defeasibility and frameworks of fairness
This paper examines the law on good character evidence in criminal trials through a discussion of the important but under-analysed case of Hunter , in which a five-judge Court of Appeal sought to clarify the law on good character directions to the jury. However, it is argued here that the judgment conflicts with the leading House of Lords decision in Aziz . The paper considers how the court misinterpreted the law and, in particular, the defeasibl…
The Grammatical Structures of Process Music: Exploring the Music of Tom Johnson Through Combinatory Patterns in Sound Poetry
This article explores similarities between the permutational processes in sound poetry and process music, suggesting models for new music which supports audience comprehension of processual language. The use of textual materials within the poetry is examined, with reference to the analytic nature of the English language and how different sentence types arise in performance from the results of the processes employed. The article then translates th…

A Winter in North China
In the winter of 1890, the Reverend T. M. Morris and the Reverend Richard Glover spent five months journeying through the Shantung and Shansi provinces in north China. Commissioned by the Baptist Missionary Society to inspect the work of all missionaries in the area, the two clergymen travelled by boat, cart, wheelbarrow and 'other strange conveyances' in order to complete their mission. Published in 1892, this book compiles the letters sent home…
Patristic Quotations and Gospel Sources
Years of research on the sources of the gospels of Matthew and Luke led long since to three conclusions which many of us still find valid, first, that both these authors used our gospel of Mark; second, that they both used another source, commonly called Q; third, that each also used a source unknown to the other, and these two sources have been named M and L respectively. But about the nature of Q, M and L there are plenty of unanswered question…
Matonabbee (ca. 1736-1782)
may doubt whether either ... [Sitting Bull or Tekumseh] was abler than the Chipewyan diplomat, trader, and explorer, Matonabbee - Samuel Hearne's guide on his final, and successful, journey to the Coppermine River. ... Nearly all we know about him comes from Hearne, who was so long employed at that post. ... At Churchill Matonabbee learned much. He became a perfect master of the Cree language, as well as his native Chipewyan; he some progress Eng…
Moses Norton (ca. Late 1720s-1773)
As his father had, Norton did some exploring when his boss, Ferdinand Jacobs, sent him to Chesterfield Inlet 1762. He returned to report reaching its very end and finding that no hoped-for Northwest Passage existed there. That autumn, Jacobs went to command York Fort, and Norton succeeded him at Churchill. He now had opportunities to display what the late Professor Rich generously called his uncommon energy and perception. One may allow the energ…

The Didache's Quotations and the Synoptic Gospels
Ever since its publication by Bryennios in 1883 the Didache has been welcomed as a witness to our gospels. ‘We are surprised at the amount of testimony.... that it bears to the Canon’, wrote Bishop Lightfoot in 1885. Forty years later B. H. Streeter hesitated to claim it as a witness to Luke, but insisted that its author seemed ‘not only to have read Matthew, but also, like Ignatius, to refer to it under the title of “The Gospel”’. More positivel…

It was entirely white, except for the back which was mottled with brown. The fur was short and fine like that of the Ermine. The Indians, in their manner of expression, said it came from a place where there was little or no day. This description sounds e…
