News from Canadian Food Studies / La Revue canadienne des études sur l’alimentation
Over the course of 2025, the Canadian Food Studies / La Revue canadienne des études sur l'alimentation (CFS/RCÉA) Management Team has been working on two important projects: a new podcast, Digesting Food Studies / Concentré d’études sur l’alimentation (DFS/CÉSA), that draws on journal articles and issues, and a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy aimed at addressing the effects of this transformational technology and offering guidance on its …
Reflecting on a decade of Canadian food studies
In this editorial, the Management Team of Canadian Food Studies / La Revue canadienne des études sur l’alimentation (CFS/RCÉA) looks back across the history of the journal and towards its future. They collectively reflect on the journal’s ethos, its range of publications, and what the future might hold in an effort to promote rigorous scholarship done differently

Transitioning to a vegetarian or vegan diet
This empirical paper explores the transition to a vegetarian or a vegan diet, at the meeting point of individual biographies and their social context. It is based on 13 interviews conducted with 14 participants in the province of Quebec, Canada. It mobilises a conceptual framework that couples a social practice approach (SPT) with the concept of ‘fractures’ as developed by O’Neill and colleagues (2019). The results show that the transition to a v…
Care and consumption
In this article, I argue that care is a useful tool to think about consumption as embedded in social relations within and outside the market, and draw the consequences for moving towards sustainable lifestyles. To do so, I engage in a review of the literature that brings together consumption and care in its various forms. I review three main bodies of work: the literature on consumption that links care to consumer behaviour and consumption practi…
Challenging social norms to recraft practices
ENERGISE is the first large-scale European effort to reduce household energy use through a change initiative that adopted a ‘living lab’ approach informed by social practice theory. Two challenges were introduced to 306 households in eight countries: to lower indoor temperatures and to reduce laundry cycles. This contribution demonstrates the usefulness of a practice-centered design that takes habits and routines as an entry point for understandi…
Promoting 'pro', 'low', and 'no' meat consumption in Switzerland
Cutting through conflicting prescriptions
This paper takes as a starting point "food consumption prescriptions", or guidelines on what and how one should eat when it comes to "healthy and sustainable diets". Through qualitative research in Switzerland, involving discourse analysis, observations, in-depth interviews, and focus groups, we set out to uncover the more dominant prescriptions put forward by a variety of actors, how consumers represent these prescriptions, as well as overlaps a…
The future of African cities The impoverishment of the African continent and the crisis of its nation-States are leading the World Bank towards specific aid programmes for local authorities
