Bilingual Generation Effect: Variations in Participant Bilingual Type and List Type
Slamecka and Katsaiti (1987, Experiment 1) reported that there is no generation effect with bilingual materials under intentional learning instructions. In contrast, O'Neill, Roy, and Tremblay (1993, Experiment 1) demonstrated a bilingual generation effect when an incidental learning set was induced. In the present experiment, the possibility that another procedural variation between the two studies accounts for the disparate findings was examine…
The Effect of Imagery-Based Mnemonics on the Long-Term Retention of Chinese Characters
Two studies compared the effects of imagery-based instruction and rote learning on the long-term recall of English translations of Chinese ideographs. Both studies used a 2×2 factorial design with Learning Condition (mnemonic vs. rote learning) and Time (immediate vs. delayed recall) as the between-subjects factors. In Study 1 total exposure time to Chinese ideographs and their English equivalents was held constant for both learning conditions. C…
Development of Memory-Monitoring and Self-Efficacy in Children
To test the hypothesis that strategic learning and self-efficacy in children develop according to their memory-monitoring skills 30 children each in Grades 2 and 4 were trained to monitor their performance. Second graders receiving such generalized training were more likely to approach a paired-associate learning task using a successful strategy of elaboration than control subjects not so instructed. In contrast, virtually all fourth graders elab…
