    Open Access•Bianca V Gurrola, Wendy S Francis•ARTICLE•Psychonomic Bulletin & Review•2025

  • Isolated and contextualized comprehension exposures have sustained effects on spoken word production: Evidence from bilingual repetition priming

    Open Access•Wendy S Francis, Erika L Guedea Morales et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Memory and Language•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 57

  • Bilingual proficiency effects in paired-associate learning of vocabulary in an unfamiliar language

    Open Access•Wendy S Francis, Oscar I Nájera•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 28

We investigated three aspects of paired associate learning of vocabulary in an unfamiliar language: monolingual-bilingual differences, effects of dominance and language proficiency, and the possible role of associative strategies. Spanish–English bilinguals (48 English-dominant and 48 Spanish-dominant) and English-speaking monolinguals (n = 48) learned Swahili–English and Swahili-Spanish word pairs. Learning was assessed using cued recall (Swahil…

  • Mechanisms of long-term repetition priming in recognising speech in noise

    Liam J Gleason, Wendy S Francis•ARTICLE•Memory•2024

Recognition of speech in noise is facilitated when spoken sentences are repeated a few minutes later, but the levels of representation involved in this effect have not been specified. Three experiments tested whether the effect would transfer across modalities and languages. In Experiment 1, participants listened to sets of high- and low-constraint sentences and read other sets in an encoding phase. At test, these sentences and new sentences were…

  • How word comprehension exposures facilitate later spoken production: Implications for lexical processing and repetition priming

Naoko Tsuboi, Wendy S Francis et al.•ARTICLE•Memory•2021

Both comprehension and production exposures to words facilitate spoken production of the same words in picture-naming tasks performed several minutes later. Three experiments examined the mechanisms by which different types of comprehension exposures to words facilitate spoken production. Both overt and silent reading and listening tasks elicited substantial priming in picture naming at 10-minute but not 1-week retention intervals. Relative to si…

  • Bilingual novel word learning in sentence contexts: Effects of semantic and language variation

Open Access•Justin Lauro, Ana Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Memory and Language•2020

  • Rethinking bilingual enhancement effects in associative learning of foreign language vocabulary: The role of proficiency in the mediating language

Open Access•Naoko Tsuboi, Wendy S Francis•ARTICLE•Journal of Memory and Language•2020

  • Shared core meanings and shared associations in bilingual semantic memory: Evidence from research on implicit memory

    Open Access•Wendy S Francis•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Aims and objectives/purpose/research questions: The degree of overlap across languages in bilingual semantic memory has been debated in the cognitive bilingual literature for decades. This paper focuses on theory and recent evidence addressing the questions of whether translation-equivalent words in a bilingual person’s two languages access common core-meaning representations and whether long-standing semantic/conceptual associations among words …

  • Cognitive integration of language and memory in bilinguals: Semantic representation

    Wendy S Francis•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1999•Cited by: 13

Understanding cognitive research on the integration of 2 languages in bilingual memory is difficult because of the different terminology, methodology, analysis, and interpretation strategies that scholars with different backgrounds bring to the research. These studies can be usefully categorized on 2 dimensions: memory for verbal experience versus linguistic knowledge, and systemwise versus pairwise issues. Experimental findings in this area conv…
