Cynicism About Organizational Change
Cynicism about Organizational Change
The underlying attribution process for cynicism about organizational change is examined with six samples from four different organizations. The samples include hourly (n=777) and salaried employees (n= 155) from a manufacturing plant, faculty (n=293) and staff (n=302) from a large university, managers from a utility company (n=97), and young managers (n=65) from various organizations who were attending an evening MBA program. This form of cynicis…
Single-Item Reliability
The reliability of a single-item measure of student-rated college teaching effectiveness was estimated with two different methods and at two levels of analysis. The two methods are the correction for attenuation formula and factor analysis. The two levels of analysis are the group level (10, 682 classes) and the individual level (323, 262 students). Reliability estimates were higher using factor analysis (.88) than the correction for attenuation …
Union elections at the local level
Survey data were collected before and after a local union governance election in which half of the committeeperson incumbents lost. Examination of committeeperson role effectiveness shows that those who lost were rated significantly lower before the election compared to those who were retained. Newcomers who replaced incumbents were rated higher than those they replaced. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
Overall job satisfaction
A meta-analysis of single-item measures of overall job satisfaction (28 correlations from 17 studies with 7,682 people) found an average uncorrected correlation of .63 (SD = .09) with scale measures of overall job satisfaction. The overall mean correlation (corrected only for reliability) is .67 (SD = .08), and it is moderated by the type of measurement scale used. The mean corrected correlation for the best group of scale measures (8 correlation…
Estimating the Reliability of a Single-Item Measure
Single-item measures of employees' attitudes and beliefs are generally discouraged because their (internal consistency) reliability cannot be estimated. This results in the concern that reliability may be unacceptably low, particularly when compared to scales used to measure the same construct. A method for estimating the reliability of a single-item measure is demonstrated on original data that included both a single-item and a multiple-item mea…
Effectiveness of Problem-Solving Groups
Multiple measures of both group process and effectiveness of outcome were gathered from 100 problem-solving groups of 526 people. Generally low correlations among the measures of effectiveness of process and those of outcome effectiveness indicate that effectiveness is multidimensional as previously suggested. The relationships between measures of process and effectiveness of outcome supported previous models suggesting general linkages between t…
The effects of met expectations on newcomer attitudes and behaviors
A review of research on the effects of met expectations for newcomers to organizations located 31 studies of 17,241 people. A meta-analysis found mean (corrected) correlations of .39 for job satisfaction and organizational commitment, .29 for intent to leave, .19 for job survival, and .11 for job performance. However, all of these mean correlations had significant between-studies variance. By using strict conformity with Porter and Steer's (1973)…

Image Congruence and the Treatment of Difference Scores in Organizational Choice Research
This study examined how the perceived congruence between self-and organizational images affects one's choice of a graduate school of business. Applicants with a positive self-image (N = 64) select schools most like their self-image, whereas applicants with a negative self-image (N = 18) select schools least like their self-image. The retention of directionality in difference scores is shown to be a useful data analysis technique when testing cong…
