I that is We and We that is I
In a Hegelian spirit, this paper advances a methodological holism based on the ontological primacy of collective agency. The first section sketches the general problematic of methodological and ontological individualism and shows critical points. Two core components are discerned: an atom-like view of individuals as separate and independent from society and a mechanistic pattern of explanation that reduces institutions to interactions of singular…

Making Sense of Hegel’s Dialectic
The paper presents an interpretation of a central Hegelian concept “dialectic” reading him as a post-Kantian critical thinker. We can speak of objective dialectic as processes in the world and subjective dialectic conceived of as a method. I shortly discuss the correctness of the approach to dialectic as a special kind of logic and relation of dialectic to formal logic. (Subjective) dialectic is interpreted as a method of inquiry that is closely …
Pyrrhonian criticism of the notion of “nature of things”
The paper analyzes the criticism of the notion “nature of things” within the pyrrhonian sceptical tradition. I begin with a brief exposition of two contemporary epistemological approaches that sets up the boundaries of the discussion: normative and descriptive ones. However, this dichotomy is not strict. The notion of “nature of things” implicitly underlies the discussion, as I argue, as a normative view about the true reality and its formal cha…
Ethics without theory? On advantages of the Pyrrhonian over the dogmatic way of life
The paper discusses two interrelated problems pertaining to the Pyrrhonian way of life. We try to rise to the challenge and play devil’s advocate, arguing from the skeptical point of view. The first part portrays a reconstruction of central skeptical arguments against the dogmatic ethics that attack some epistemological, metaphysical and ethical issues of the central dogmatic concept “the good by nature”. The second part considers the arguments s…
Is the Pyrrhonist happy, again? On ἀταραξία and πάθος in Sextus Empiricus
The article tackles the question whether the Pyrrhonian skeptic can be happy having “pathe” in his life. Thus, the consistency of Pyrrhonian skepticism is discussed. In the first section, I consider the notions of ataraxia and tarache. The source of unhappiness is considered by Sextus to be beliefs about the good and the evil, which give rise to intense longing that creates anxiety. Sceptical suspension of judgement extirpates beliefs and therefo…
The Problem of Disagreement and Fields of Sense
The paper considers the problem of knowing things starting with pyrrhonical skeptical argumentation that puts the problem of disagreement in accounts of things. The problem is rooted in ontology and metaphysics taken classically as knowledge of being as far as it is being. The first part deals with the pyrrhonical problem of disagreement that rests on ontological picture of “nature of things” which launches epistemological obstacles. The second p…
