Effects of Novelty and Oddity on Visual Selective Attention
Effects of novelty and of oddity on selective attention were investigated through tachistoscopic recognition. When a pre‐exposure field consisted of dots of one colour, letters of a different colour were more likely to be identified than letters of the same colour. In displays of 10 letters, two letters differing in colour from the remainder were more likely to be identified. Tachistoscopic exposure precluded determination of responses by eye mov…
Extension to Indian Subjects of a Study of Exploratory and Verbal Responses to Visual Patterns
Procedures previously carried out with Ugandan and Canadian subjects were used with Indian villagers and Indian students. The stimulus material consisted of line drawings, sampling a number of complexity and incongruity variables. The procedures involved (a) recording of looking time, (b) paired-comparison preference, and (c) ratings on seven scales. Although there were differences among groups of subjects, there were also similarities, which in …

Conflict and Reaction Time
Questions are raised concerning the conditions under which reaction time increases with conflict and the definition of conflict. Consistencies in Kiesler's data with Berlyne's predictions are noted

Uncertainty and Epistemic Curiosity
Two experiments were concerned with the effects of uncertainty on epistemic curiosity. Quotations, each coupled with the names of possible authors and with a distribution of fictitious experts' guesses regarding the true author, formed the experimental material. The role of uncertainty was predicted from a theory according to which epistemic curiosity will increase with degree of conceptual conflict. The two experiments showed reported curiosity t…

Conflict and Choice Time
Four variables have been suggested as determinants of degree of conflict: (1) number, (2) nearness to equality in strength, (3) absolute strength, and (4) degree of incompatibility, of competing response tendencies. first two, but not others, have figured in investigations relating reaction time to information theory. Three experiments were carried out to test effects of all these variables on choice time. Two types of choice RT were recorded: fi…
