Introduction: Firefighting is a highly demanding profession, involving frequent exposure to stress and life-threatening situations. This pilot study investigates firefighters' cognitive and emotional responses underlying problem-solving and emotion regulation during stressful operations. It explores how and to what extent firefighters experience their thoughts and emotions, focusing on subjective experiences of valence and physiological arousal, …
Crisis Preparedness and Systemic Risk
This study explores how Norwegian leaders in rural municipalities attend to disaster risk governance and prepare for resilient response to threats from systemic, interconnected, and cascading hazards. Systemic risk management in the Norwegian municipalities will depend on the context and how critical organizational processes are managed by the municipal leaders. Following the COVID‐19 pandemic and an increased awareness of climate‐related threats…
Predictors of acute stress disorder following a military maritime accident
The present study examines the prevalence and predictors of symptoms of acute stress disorder (ASD) in crew members of Norwegian frigate HNoMS Helge Ingstad (n = 118) following the November 8 th, 2018, collision with civilian oil tanker Sola TS , which led to grounding and total loss of the frigate. Collected six months prior to the accident (T1), pre-deployment scores on the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), Hopkins Symptom Checklist 25 (HS…
Training and Development of Incident Commanders in the Fire and Rescue Services
The aim of this scoping review was to summarize scholarly research on training and development of first responders and incident commanders in the fire and rescue services, with an emphasis on identifying emerging research questions and research gaps. From 2013 to 2024, 1343 studies were identified from the search in Web of Science, ProQuest, and Ovid/Psycinfo databases. A detailed search, screening, and selection strategy was performed, and 28 st…
Covid-19 impacts on emergency responder resilience in Bergen and London
This study qualitatively compares how 18 experienced emergency responders from the fire services in Bergen, Norway, and London, United Kingdom, maintained and adapted their organisation's work, routines, and leadership practices to maintain operational capacity, preparedness, and resilience during the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic from 2020-23. Semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted with nine experienced emergency r…
A qualitative study of the psychological effects of quarantine as an infection control measure in Norway
This study explores the psychological reactions to being placed in quarantine during the early stage (March and April 2020) of the COVID-19 lockdown in Norway. We interviewed a sample of nineteen Norwegian citizens aged 21–64 years who were quarantined for 14 days in the early period of the pandemic before testing and vaccination were available to the general population. A semi-structured interview guide was used to conduct in-depth interviews ab…
Teaching sustainability at the high sea
This case study explores educational practices and processes in an interdisciplinary summer course addressing SDG14 (Life below water), SDG13 (Climate action), SDG4 (Education), SDG3 (Good health and wellbeing), and SDG17 (Partnerships). From May to August in 2022, students from 12 countries participated in an undergraduate summer course (SDG 200 Ocean–Climate–Society) on the sailship Statsraad Lehmkuhl as part of the One Ocean Expedition. Sustai…
Social Participation
Empowerment is a concept that is hardly used in the field of migration. However, this approach, which is based on participation, promotion of experiential knowledge, peer support, strengthening through exchange with others who have experienced similar difficulties, and change by and with the communities affected, is particularly relevant to an understanding of the migration experiences of immigrants in precarious situations, dealing with the diff…
Trust in a military context
The aim was to explore which components military personnel in peacekeeping operations perceive as contributing to trust in their superior and subordinate leaders during international or national operations or exercises. Data were collected among 591 military officers and cadets from Norway and Sweden using a questionnaire with open-ended questions. Two superior categories emerged: Individual-Related Characteristics and Communication- and Relation…
The Role of Psychological Capital in Perception of Safety Climate Among Air Traffic Controllers
Previous research has shown that psychological capital (PsyCap) is associated with desired employee behavioral and performance outcomes. Extending previous research, we examine, in two studies, if the PsyCap of Norwegian air traffic controllers is related to their perceptions of safety climate. Based on bootstrapping procedures, results from Study 1 ( N = 77) and Study 2 ( N = 38) revealed that PsyCap was positively correlated with safety climate…
Authentic Leadership and Safety Climate Among Seafarers
This study examined relationships between authentic leadership and safety climate among 463 seafarers sailing on 23 merchant vessels in the international shipping industry. A multiple regression analysis was performed, where authentic leadership made a statistically significant contribution to explaining variance in safety climate, controlling for age, rank on board, and social desirable responding. Adding an interaction between authentic leaders…
In Search of Psychological Explanations of Terrorism
An Exploratory Study of Differences in Emotional Intelligence in U.S. and Norwegian Undergraduate Students
The present study explored sex and cultural differences in Emotional Intelligence scores in samples from Norway (n = 297) and the United States (n = 234). Significant main effects for sex were found in overall Emotional Intelligence scores and the Empathy factor. In addition, results revealed a small but significant effect for culture in the Self-control factor, as well as support for an interaction between sex and culture in the Handling Relatio…
Risk as feelings or risk and feelings? A cross‐lagged panel analysis
This article focuses on affective and cognitive processes underlying the perception of risk. A limitation with most process models of affect/cognition is that they include only concurrent emotions. By following a group (n = 129) of military sailors prospectively during an international operation, we explored longitudinal relations between perceived risk and related feelings. The risk‐relevant variables were embedded in a larger questionnaire aime…
