  • Mental health of entrepreneurs and daily recovery experiences

Open Access•Mathieu Le Moal, A Roy Thurik et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2026

We analyze the relationships between daily recovery experiences after work (detachment, relaxation, mastery and control) and mental health (well-being and burnout) based on four surveys among French entrepreneurs (small business owners). First , comparing our results with those of previous studies on employees’ recovery experiences, we find that French entrepreneurs have fewer recovery experiences for all four dimensions. Second , we find that ex…

  • Seeking the roots of entrepreneurship

Open Access•Annelot Wismans, Pauline Jansen et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Psychology•2024

Entrepreneurial personality research has mostly used cross‐sectional data, giving rise to the question of whether the results can be used to predict entrepreneurial outcomes. Using a unique longitudinal dataset, we investigate whether and from what age personality in childhood and adolescence predicts entrepreneurial intention in young adulthood. We cover a time span of 17 years by assessing personality at four different developmental phases (6–9…

  • The impact of entrepreneurship research on other academic fields

Open Access•A Roy Thurik, David B Audretsch et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2024

The remarkable ascent of entrepreneurship witnessed as a scientific field over the last 4 decades has been made possible by entrepreneurship’s ability to absorb theories, paradigms, and methods from other fields such as economics, psychology, sociology, geography, and even biology. The respectability of entrepreneurship as an academic discipline is now evidenced by many other fields starting to borrow from the entrepreneurship view. In the presen…

  • What gets published and what doesn’t? Exploring optimal distinctiveness and diverse expectations in entrepreneurship articles

Open Access•Marie Madeleine Meurer, Maksim Belitski et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2024

The field of entrepreneurship has seen remarkable growth, increasing the expectations of academic audiences. Articles need to balance novelty with rigorous methodology, theoretical contributions, social implications, and coherent argumentation to succeed in the publication process. However, navigating these varied and sometimes conflicting expectations to achieve optimal distinctiveness in academic narratives is challenging for authors. To explor…

  • Genome-wide analysis identifies genetic effects on reproductive success and ongoing natural selection at the Fads locus

    Open Access•Iain Mathieson, Felix R Day et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 70

  • Polygenic prediction of educational attainment within and between families from genome-wide association analyses in 3 million individuals

Open Access•Aysu Okbay, Yeda Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Genetics•2022

We conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment (EA) in a sample of ~3 million individuals and identify 3,952 approximately uncorrelated genome-wide-significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A genome-wide polygenic predictor, or polygenic index (PGI), explains 12–16% of EA variance and contributes to risk prediction for ten diseases. Direct effects (i.e., controlling for parental PGIs) explain roughly half th…

  • Face mask use during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Annelot Wismans, Peter van der Zwan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

We highlight that those countries that aim for widespread use of face masks should set strict measures, stress self-related risks of COVID-19, and use clear communication

  • Economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on entrepreneurship and small businesses

Open Access•Maksim Belitski, Christina Guenther et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2022

The existential threat to small businesses, based on their crucial role in the economy, is behind the plethora of scholarly studies in 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Examining the 15 contributions of the special issue on the “Economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on entrepreneurship and small businesses,” the paper comprises four parts: a systematic review of the literature on the effect on entrepreneurship and small businesse…

  • Risk of burnout in French entrepreneurs during the Covid-19 crisis

Open Access•Olivier Torrès, Alexandre Benzari et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2022

The risk of burnout in French entrepreneurs has increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which calls for not only financial support but also other forms of support. The COVID-19 pandemic presents many threats for entrepreneurs since their business survival is often directly at stake. These threats are not just financial but also related to health, such as the threat of burnout. The findings of our study show that for French entrepren…

  • A decade of research on the genetics of entrepreneurship

    Open Access•Cornelius A Rietveld, Eric A W Slob et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2021

Studies analyzing the heritability of entrepreneurship indicate that explanations for why people engage in entrepreneurship that ignore genes are incomplete. However, despite promises that were solidly backed up with ex ante power calculations, attempts to identify specific genetic variants underlying the heritable variation in entrepreneurship have until now been unsuccessful. We describe the methodological issues hampering the identification of…

  • Attention‐Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms and Entrepreneurial Orientation

    Open Access•Annelot Wismans, A Roy Thurik et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Psychology•2020

There is a small body of literature linking attention‐deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and its symptoms to entrepreneurial manifestations. Some studies take a subclinical perspective by studying the presence of symptoms, while other studies take a clinical perspective by studying the formal diagnosis of ADHD. The entrepreneurial manifestations examined range from entrepreneurial intention to the choice to become self‐employed and from entrep…

  • The role of affect in entrepreneurial orientation

Open Access•Indy Bernoster, Jinia Mukerjee et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2020

Although the literature on affect (i.e., the extent to which an individual subjectively experiences feelings and emotions) is burgeoning in the field of entrepreneurship, affect has not received sufficient attention with respect to an important antecedent to entrepreneurial success—entrepreneurial orientation. In this paper, we investigate the role of both positive and negative affect in entrepreneurial orientation (i.e., the strategic posture of…

  • Small business owners and health

    Open Access•Olivier Torrès, A Roy Thurik•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2019

The present article identifies a societal and scholarly neglect for the field of small business ownership and health. We address health capital and its spillover effects and briefly outline a research program discriminating between pathogenic (negative for health) and salutogenic (positive for health) effects for a small business owner’s working life

  • Entrepreneurship and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Open Access•D Lerner, Daniel A Lerner et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2019

A growing conversation has emerged linking ostensibly dark or pathological individual-level characteristics to entrepreneurship. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is among the most central and emblematic. Recent studies have made great strides—articulating the theoretical relevance of ADHD-type behavior in entrepreneurship and suggesting a positive link consistent with narratives in the popular press. However, quantitative studies h…

  • ADHD-like behavior and entrepreneurial intentions

Open Access•Ingrid Verheul, Joern Block et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2015

Little is known about the relation between entrepreneurship and the extent of psychiatric symptoms. Validated psychiatric symptom scores are seldom used for non-clinical reasons. One prevalent symptom that deserves our interest is Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a developmental disorder characterized by inattentiveness and hyperactivity that has been linked to occupational choice and performance. Building on the perso…

  • GWAS of 126,559 Individuals Identifies Genetic Variants Associated with Educational Attainment

    Open Access•Cornelius A Rietveld, Sarah E Medland et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2013

Genetic College Many genomic elements in humans are associated with behavior, including educational attainment. In a genome-wide association study including more than 100,000 samples, Rietveld et al. (p. 1467 , published online 30 May; see the Perspective by Flint and Munafò ) looked for genes related to educational attainment in Caucasians. Small genetic effects at three loci appeared to impact educational attainment.

  • Determinants of job satisfaction

Open Access•José María Millán, Jolanda Hessels et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2013

The job satisfaction of self-employed and paid-employed workers is analyzed using the European Community Household Panel for the EU-15 covering the years 1994–2001. We distinguish between two types of job satisfaction: job satisfaction in terms of type of work and job satisfaction in terms of job security. Findings from our generalized ordered logit regressions indicate that self-employed individuals as compared to paid employees are more likely …

  • Entrepreneurship and the Business Cycle

Philipp D Koellinger, A Roy Thurik•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2012

We find new empirical regularities in the business cycle in a cross-country panel of 22 OECD countries for the period 1972 to 2007; entrepreneurship Granger-causes the cycles of the world economy. Furthermore, the entrepreneurial cycle is positively affected by the national unemployment cycle. We discuss possible causes and implications of these findings

  • The entrepreneurial ladder, gender, and regional development

Open Access•Peter van der Zwan, Ingrid Verheul et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2012

Gender differences at five levels of entrepreneurial engagement are explained using country effects while controlling for individual-level variables. We distinguish between individuals who have never considered starting up a business, those who are thinking about it, and nascent, young, and established entrepreneurs. We use a large international dataset that includes respondents from 32 European countries, three Asian countries, and the United St…

How, if at all, should economists use and combine molecular genetic and economic data from these surveys? What challenges arise when analyzing genetically informative data? To illustrate, we present results from a "genome-wide…

Introduction In his Theory of Economic Development , Schumpeter (1934) emphasizes the role of the entrepreneur as prime cause of economic development. He describes how the innovating entrepreneur challenges incumbent firms by introducing new inventions that make current technologies and products obsolete, thus driving them out of the market. This process of creative destruction is the main characteristic of what has been called the Schumpeter Mar…

The recently developed genome-wide association study (GWAS) design enables the identification of genes specifically associated with economic outcomes such as occupational and other choices. This is a promising new approach for economics research which we aim to apply to the choice for entrepreneurship. However, due to multiple testing issues, very large sample sizes are needed to differentiate between true and false positives. For a GWAS on entre…

Candidate gene studies of human behavior are gaining interest in economics and entrepreneurship research. Performing and interpreting these studies is not straightforward because the selection of candidates influences the interpretation of the results. As an example, Nicolaou et al. (Small Bus Econ 36:151–155, 2011) report a significant association between a common genetic variant in the DRD3 gene and the tendency to be an entrepreneur. We fail t…
