Conceptual colour: Race, economic knowledge, and the anthropology of financialization
Economic anthropologists now carry out fieldwork in settings for which the ethnographic method was never designed, amongst powerful financial actors who are notoriously difficult to access, and in contexts which transcend geographical boundaries. This has engendered a re‐orientation of anthropology, to consider not only the economic lives of people but also the social life of devices and concepts. Drawing on ethnographic readings of corporate doc…
Balance Sheet Aesthetics and the Racial Contours of Cost: On Investment Imaginaries and Inequality
Building on research into capitalist futures and economic imagination, this article looks at the balance sheet, which is a financial statement that publicly listed companies must produce each year and is crucial to the labor of speculation. Paid to invest on behalf of institutional investors, fund managers use the balance sheet to help them speculate on future opportunities for gain; it is a tool that has imaginative effects and projects ethical …
Commentary on ‘The Racial Wealth Gap in South Africa and the United States’ by Chelwa, Maboshe and Hamilton
Where is the Good in the World?: Ethical Life between Social Theory and Philosophy
Bringing together contributions from anthropology, sociology, religious studies, and philosophy, along with ethnographic case studies from diverse settings, this volume explores how different disciplinary perspectives on the good might engage with and enrich each other. The chapters examine how people realize the good in social life, exploring how ethics and values relate to forms of suffering, power and inequality, and, in doing so, demonstrate …
Cosmopolitanism and the global economy: Notes from China's knowledge factories
In Dalian Software Park, China's centre for IT-enabled outsourcing and offshore services, knowledge workers find themselves on the 'assembly line' of information processing, carrying out highly routinized, de-skilled, and poorly paid work for which they are vastly overqualified. Following the recent attention to culture and personhood in studies of global capitalism, I argue that these knowledge workers are motivated by two forms of cosmopolitani…
Constructing conviction through action and narrative: How Money Managers Manage Uncertainty and the Consequence for Financial Market Functioning
Financial assets are abstract entities. Their value depends on beliefs which are inherently social and, we argue, emotional. Recent events have revealed profound uncertainty at the heart of financial markets, the manifest existence of emotion and the way confidence is crucial to orderly market functioning. Using findings from two interview studies, supported by ethnographic observation, we elaborate on the irreducible cognitive and emotional conf…
Producing 'global' corporate subjects in post-Mao China: Management consultancy, culture and corporate social responsibility
China's rampant economic modernization-much discussed, vaunted, and criticised-has led to an influx of foreign corporations. Along with substantial investment they usher in new problems of modernity. Most pressing, at least from the perspective of Western managers, is how to 'reengineer' the Chinese knowledge worker to think and behave in accordance with global business norms. Drawing on 16 months fieldwork inside the China arm of global manageme…
