  • Culture and Gender Effects in Pain Beliefs and the Prediction of Pain Tolerance

    Open Access•Sangeetha Nayak, Samuel C Shiflett et al.•ARTICLE•Cross-Cultural Research•2000•Cited by: 4•References: 20

The goals of this study were (a) to explore beliefs about appropriate or normative pain responses among college students in the United States and India and (b) to examine differences in pain tolerance and intensity ratings and the role beliefs play in predicting pain tolerance. Scales to assess beliefs about appropriate pain responses in males and females were completed by college students in both countries. Ratings of pain intensity were then ob…

Fredric M Levine, Evelyn Sandeen et al.•BOOK•Conceptualization in psychotherapy•1985

  • Attribution and contrast

    Open Access•Fredric M Levine, Joan E Broderick et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1983

Within motivational theory, there have been several demonstrations that giving an ‘external’ reward for a task reduces ‘intrinsic’ motivation. One explanation of these results is that the subject attributes engaging in the rewarded task for the reward rather than to the ‘intrinsic’ value of the task. This article provides evidence suggesting that the finding of reduced value of a rewarded task is, in some cases, due to perceptual contrast. By giv…

  • The Empirical Anchor Technique

    Fredric M Levine•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1967

A simple experimental technique is proposed for assessing the construct validity of factor titles. The technique involves writing items which are implicit titles of an emergent factor, adding these items to a cross-validation sample with the hypothesis that the items should load high on the given factor and low on other factors. The results of the cross-validation factor analysis would then give estimates of convergent and discriminant validity o…

  • Reply to “Note”

    Open Access•Fredric M Levine•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

The criticisms that my experiment did not measure arousal failed to point out that: behavioral operational definitions of arousal were clearly stated, arousal is a concept and not an entity, psychophysiological measures are neither “truer” nor more direct than behavioral measures

  • Relation of Stimulus-Seeking Behavior and Arousal Level

    Open Access•Fredric M Levine•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1966

In order to test whether stimulation-seeking behavior is related to arousal level, Ss were divided on the basis of both a questionnaire measure, the Taylor MAS, and an arousal-producing task into high- and low-arousal groups. The frequency with which they pressed a telegraph key to turn speech noise either on or off was the dependent variable. There were no differences between the high- and low-arousal groups in the number of times they turned no…
