How do Healthcare Workers ‘Do’ Guidelines? Exploring How Policy Decisions Impacted UK Healthcare Workers During the First Phase of the Covid-19 Pandemic
We describe how COVID-19-related policy decisions and guidelines impacted healthcare workers (HCWs) during the UK’s first COVID-19 pandemic phase. Guidelines in healthcare aim to streamline processes, improve quality and manage risk. However, we argue that during this time the guidelines we studied often fell short of these goals in practice. We analysed 74 remote interviews with 14 UK HCWs over 6 months (February–August 2020). Reframing guidelin…
How did UK policymaking in the Covid-19 response use science? Evidence from scientific advisers
Background: Responses to COVID-19 have invested heavily in science. How this science was used is therefore important. Our work extends existing knowledge on the use of science in the pandemic by capturing scientific advisers’ experiences in real time. Aims and objectives: Our aim was to present generalisable messages on key qualifications or difficulties involved in speaking of ‘following the science’. Methods: Ninety-three interviews with UK sci…
Learning from the past and present: Social science implications for Covid-19 immunity-based documentation
In responding to the widespread impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries have proposed and implemented documentation policies that confer varying levels of freedoms or restrictions (e.g., ability to travel) based on individuals’ infection status or potential immunity. Most discussions around immunity- or infection-based documentation policies have focused on scientific plausibility, economic benefit, and challenges relating to ethics and equit…
The legacy of ZikaPLAN: A transnational research consortium addressing Zika
Global health research partnerships with institutions from high-income countries and low- and middle-income countries are one of the European Commission's flagship programmes. Here, we report on the ZikaPLAN research consortium funded by the European Commission with the primary goal of addressing the urgent knowledge gaps related to the Zika epidemic and the secondary goal of building up research capacity and establishing a Latin American-Europea…
Perspectives on Covid-19 testing policies and practices: A qualitative study with scientific advisors and NHS health care workers in England
Consideration must be given to the implications of mass NHS staff testing, including the accuracy of information communicated to HCWs; how HCWs interpret, manage, and act on testing guidance; and the influence these have on health care organisations and services

ZikaPLAN: Addressing the knowledge gaps and working towards a research preparedness network in the Americas
Zika Preparedness Latin American Network (ZikaPLAN) is a research consortium funded by the European Commission to address the research gaps in combating Zika and to establish a sustainable network with research capacity building in the Americas. Here we present a report on ZikaPLAN`s mid-term achievements since its initiation in October 2016 to June 2019, illustrating the research objectives of the 15 work packages ranging from virology, diagnost…
Articulating the historical moment: Turkey, Europe, and Eurovision 2003
For many in Turkey, winning the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) was regarded as a symbol of finally being accepted as a "European" country rather than a "Middle Eastern" one. This chapter discusses some aspects of the "historical moment" in which Eurovision 2003 occurred and suggests the ways that Turkey&s;s participation in the ESC defined that moment. Turkey&s;s victory in the ESC in 2003 dramatically showed how important culture can be in Turkey…
ZikaPLAN: Zika Preparedness Latin American Network
The ongoing Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreak in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands has underlined the need for a coordinated research network across the whole region that can respond rapidly to address the current knowledge gaps in Zika and enhance research preparedness beyond Zika. The European Union under its Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme awarded three research consortia to respond to this need. Here we present the…
The Land of our Origin: Music and History in the Norway-Azerbaijan Connection
In 1995 Norwegian archaeologist and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl went public with his theory that Scandinavia had been populated by people who had, in the distant past, migrated from present-day Azerbaijan in the Caucasus (Heyerdahl 1995). While academic archaeologists and historians scoffed at Heyerdahl's theories and dismissed them as pseudoscience, the idea that there was an ancient connection between Azerbaijan and Norway, and that the people li…

Muslim Rap, Halal Soaps, and Revolutionary Theater: Artistic Developments in the Muslim World
Berlin–Frankfurt–Istanbul: Turkish hip-hop in motion
This article explores how a focus on the movement of people, especially between countries, might provide new perspectives on music scenes. After a brief case study of a rap song and summary of the origins of Turkish hip-hop, the article presents a series of vignettes from ethnographic fieldwork with Turkish hip-hoppers and their contacts in Istanbul and Stockholm, in which the theme of movement, and the enduring transnational connections it creat…
Hardcore Muslims: Islamic Themes in Turkish Rap in Diaspora and in the Homeland
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Islam has, according to various estimates, between 900 million and 1.4 billion adherents in more than fifty countries, making it the second-largest religion in the world. Rap music and hip-hop youth culture have also, in their brief history, achieved global status, as the essays in Tony Mitchell's edited volume Global Noise (2001b) illustrate. It is perhaps not surprising that the long-standing world …
Living underground is tough: Authenticity and locality in the hip-hop community in Istanbul, Turkey
Hip-hoppers in Istanbul, Turkey, spend much discursive energy talking and rapping about how the Turkish hip-hop movement is underground, putting a particularly local spin on their uses of a global cultural form. This spatial metaphor has thus become central to local constructions of hip-hop in Istanbul. This paper explores the different meanings the underground concept has for Turkish hip-hoppers through a combination of ethnographic research and…
