Co-glass and blue pigment smalt production at the turn of the 15th/16th centuries: LA-ICP-MS study
Cobalt is able to provide glass a deep shade of blue, which has been known and used since antiquity. Only in the 16th century CE, Co-coloured glass started to be used as a painting pigment smalt, which required development of new procedures. These were interconnected with changes in Co extraction and establishment of glassworks and pigment mills in the Ore Mts. on the Czech-German border. In this study, a variety of samples (archaeological glass,…
Tracing origin and history of Virgin and Child in Majesty, the oldest wooden polychrome statuette in the Czech Republic
A wooden polychrome statuette of Virgin and Child in Majesty, currently in the Museum Montanelli in Prague, is actually a torso . It was created in the 11th or 12th century at the latest, being the oldest wooden polychrome statuette in the Czech Republic. Current research combining advanced imaging and micro‐analytical methods substantially contributed to the determination of its regional origin and detection and dating of later interventions. Id…

Identification of Vivianite in Painted Works of Art and Its Significance for Provenance and Authorship Studies
Vivianite ( F e 3 ( PO 4 ) 2 ·8 H 2 O ) is a rare blue historical pigment, which can be profitably used in authorship ascription or copy identification. However, its tendency to degrade complicates its proper identification in paint layers. Reference vivianite mineralogical samples were analysed in order to compare and to test the limits of structural analyses on possibly degraded vivianite samples ( X ‐ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscop…
Unique Pre-Romanesque Murals in Kostoľany Pod Tríbečom, Slovakia: The Painting Technique and Causes of Damage
Pre-Romanesque murals at Kostoľany pod Tríbečom, Slovakia, have been investigated by portable X-ray fluorescence and by microanalytical methods to identify painting materials (pigments and binders), and to explain the degradation of colours. Today, missing green and blue shades have been reconstructed according to residual concentrations of Cu, which correspond to copper chlorides—products of salt corrosion of the copper carbonates azurite and/or…
Mineralogy of Bohemian Green Earth Pigment and Its Microanalytical Evidence in Historical Paintings: Mineralogy of Bohemian green earth pigment
While the most famous historical green earth deposits in Italy and Cyprus were exceptionally rich in celadonite, the deposits near Kadaň, Czech Republic, consisted of thin Fe-rich celadonite impregnations accompanied by interstratified celadonite/smectite. In superimposed tuffs, smectites become prevalent and their colour changes from forest to olive green. Powder X-ray microdiffraction and infrared microspectroscopy permit us to distinguish betw…
