  • Sufficiency as a “Strategy of the Enough”

Open Access•Julia Michaelis, Bendix Vogel et al.•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2024

A recent discussion paper Sufficiency as a “Strategy of the Enough”: A Necessary Debate by the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU) aims to intensify the debate on sufficiency, a central but neglected element of future-oriented policy. It defines sufficiency as the need to limit the consumption and production of ecologically critical goods and services, mainly by the economically rich, as a basis for reducing distributional injustices…

  • C AMS measurement of CO 2 samples with the high throughput HVE gas interface system

    Open Access•G Scognamiglio, M Klein et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 10

The newly designed HVE gas interface enables the AMS measurement of carbon samples in CO 2 form. The CO 2 , e.g. resulting from the sample combustion in an elemental analyzer, is adsorbed in a zeolite trap and subsequently transferred to a motor-driven syringe. Once diluted with He, the gas mixture is transferred into the ion source of the AMS system. A carbon ion beam is formed in the ion source and mass-analyzed by the AMS system, resulting in …

  • Business Model Involvement, Adaptive Capacity, and the Triple Bottom Line at the Base of the Pyramid

    Open Access•Ernst Verwaal, M Klein et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Ethics•2021•References: 7

Almost two decades ago, Prahalad and Hammond [Harv Bus Rev, 80(9):48–59, 2002] introduced the base/bottom of the pyramid (BOP) approach to profitably serving the poor with business models adapted from developed markets while alleviating poverty. In response to disappointing results and ethical criticism, the BOP approach evolved from a just-for-profit approach with a passive role of the poor to an inclusive development approach that integrates th…

  • Religious and Scientific Instruction on Evolution and Origins in Israeli Schools

    Rachel S A Pear, Dov Berger et al.•ARTICLE•Religious Education•2020

With more investigation into the reception of evolution in non-Christian majority cultures, and the increased awareness that anti-evolution sentiment is a global phenomenon, new educational resources are being developed to meet newly understood needs. This article explores the situation in Israel regarding conceptions of the compatibility of evolution and religion, as well as the educational initiatives being developed to advance dialogue. Includ…

  • A Novel Dedicated HVE 14 C AMS System

    Open Access•M Klein, N C Podaru et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 7

High Voltage Engineering Europa (HVE) has designed a vacuum-insulated tandem accelerator dedicated to radiocarbon ( 14 C) analysis. A unique feature of the design is a magnetic charge state selector that is incorporated in the high voltage terminal, which reduces the primary source of background that originates from the injection of 13 CH − to negligible levels. As a result, background levels in the low 10 −16 regimes are anticipated, thus suppor…

    M Klein•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2012•Cited by: 49

Richard White wants his readers to view the nineteenth-century transcontinental railroads in a new light. He retells in sweeping style their story and that of the entrepreneurs who built them, illuminating this familiar tale with fresh insights, new details, and an engaging style that entertains as well as informs. The book has the scope of an epic and the humor of a black comedy. Its central theme will spark debate among business and economic hi…

The differentiated impact on the public absorption of the transported content are described dependent to experiences with it in exhibitions and publications, and can be used to rectify future approaches of similar topics. In most of these productions, technical difficulties were observed and solved through extensive use of diffe…

  • Holocene evolution of the Haifa Bay area, Israel, and its influence on ancient tell settlements

Dov Zviely, Dorit Sivan et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Cited by: 7•References: 9

The geographical evolution of Haifa Bay and Zevulun Plain, Israel, from the late Pleistocene to the Holocene, is based on detailed analysis of drilled cores. At the beginning of the Holocene the Bay area was still under terrestrial conditions. Only about 9500 to 9000 cal. yr BP, when sea level rose to about 35-30 m below present sea level (b.s.l.), did Nile-derived sand start to bypass the Carmel headland and Haifa Bay come into existence as a mo…

  • Fast and Accurate Sequential Injection AMS with Gated Faraday Cup Current Measurement

    Open Access•M Klein, D J W Mous et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Cited by: 3•References: 7

Sequential injection or bouncing has a number of properties which can lead to a reduction of the analysis accuracy if no appropriate measures are taken. A special injection system has been developed in order to eliminate these shortcomings. The influence of source glitches or instabilities on the measured isotopic ratio is substantially reduced by a high cycling frequency. A fast beam-blanking unit guarantees the needed accuracy of the injection …

  • Chemical characterization of ancient pottery from sudan by x‐ray fluorescence spectrometry (xrf), electron microprobe analyses (empa) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS)

Open Access•M Klein, Friederike Jesse et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2004•Cited by: 5•References: 16

Sixty‐four sherds and seven natural clays from prehistoric sites in northwestern Sudan have been submitted to petrological and chemical analysis using XRF spectrometry, EMPA and ICP–MS. According to their texture, the sherds form five different groups. The high contents of P 2 O 5 (more than 0.5 wt%) discerned in 19 samples and the variation of the P 2 O 5 content in two samples of the same vessel can be explained by post‐depositional processes o…

  • Accelerator Mass Spectrometry at High Voltage Engineering Europa (HVEE)

    Open Access•A Gottdang, M Klein et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 3

In recent years, High Voltage Engineering Europa (HVEE) has demonstrated its capability of developing and installing turnkey accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) equipment for the analysis of, among others, 14 C and 129 I. Five 3MV systems using sequential and/or simultaneous injection are operational in the field today, and they have shown excellent long-term stability providing high-precision analyses on a routine basis. Another three AMS system…

  • Between Right and Realization

    M Klein•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•1998•Cited by: 6

The article analyses the actions and thinking of the PLO regarding the right of return. During the 1980s, as the PLO developed its political programme, its leaders displayed four approaches towards the relevance of the right of return in the context of a political settlement with Israel: utter disregard of the concept; literal acceptance of Resolution 194; calling for full realization of return in a Palestinian state within territories occupied i…

We report here on the radiocarbon dating of sediment samples from Bavaria using the Erlangen accelerator mass spectrometry facility. The absolute time calibration of different sediment profiles, together with pollen analyses, should establish a better chronology of climate and vegetation during Holocene in Bavaria. For an enhanced reliability of sediment dating, we measured different fractions such as bulk sediments, pollen grains, macrofossils a…
